Hässleholm: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Hässleholm
On the shores of Lake Finjasjön lies the Hovdala Nature Reserve. In Hässleholm, other nature destinations and hiking routes meet cycling trails, museums and historic buildings. You can shape your stay around scenery, exercise or culture—or combine different interests.
Experience Hovdala and the landscape
Hovdala is protected both as a nature reserve and as a Natura 2000 site. Its bat population is also remarkable: 18 of Sweden’s 19 bat species are found in the area. Deciduous woodland dominates the Göingeåsen Nature Reserve. From the Spraglerödshall viewpoint, you can look out over Lake Finjasjön and the fields of Hovdala—a tangible meeting of forest, water and open landscape.
Another natural attraction lies nearby: Tykarpsgrottan is of great geological interest, with stalactites and stalagmites slowly forming there. The mine is open to visitors only as part of guided tours. If you plan a visit, check the current tour options in advance.
Hiking with a variety of route profiles
The Vieåleden circular trail is 11 kilometres long and runs through the northern part of Hässleholm Municipality. It connects the unique castle ruins of Skeingeborg in the south with the Hörlinge ängar open-air museum and the Skåneleden trail in the north. On the Vieåleden, hikers cross the Helge å by hand-operated cable ferry during the summer season; depending on the weather, this is possible from May to October. As the crossing is weather-dependent, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.
The Hovdala Hiking Centre suggests walking tours lasting from one to four nights. For a shorter option, consider a different route: the hiking stage from Hässleholm C station to the Göingeåsen camping area is 12 kilometres long. This gives you different route lengths to consider without confusing the stage with the Vieåleden.
The Finjasjön runt hike starts at the Hässleholm Hassellundsvägen stop and leads into the Hovdala nature area along the lakeshore. Dallerödskogen lies before the route. The named starting point gives you a clear reference when planning your walk.
Compare cycling routes by length and scenery
The Göingerundan cycle route starts in the centre of Hässleholm and is 25 kilometres long. At 45 kilometres, Norra Skogsrundan is longer. It runs through flat terrain and heads north from Hässleholm towards the area around Hästveda. The two routes therefore differ in length and described course. Check the signs and trail conditions before cycling.
Castle, collections and historic buildings
At Hovdala Castle, the grounds and the main floor are clearly distinct: the park and garden are open around the clock, and admission is free. Visitors can enter the main floor as part of a guided tour. The castle gatehouse was built in 1600, giving the site a tangible layer of history.
Hässleholm Museum houses Sweden’s largest exhibition of Swedish tracked and wheeled vehicles. The museum also includes a fire service museum with fire engines and equipment, as well as a carriage museum with horse-drawn vehicles, some of them from Hovdala Castle. A large tapestry painted in the mid-19th century by local artist Olof Nilsson adds a distinctive work of art to the collection.
The historic buildings at Hässleholmsgården also tell a story spanning several decades: they date from the late 18th to the mid-19th century. There are also training routes measuring 2.5, 5.5 and 10 kilometres. The three distances offer different options for a workout; as information about the facilities may change, check before your visit.
