Bor Between Railway Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Bor
When looking for a hotel in Bor, you can consider whether railway history, cycling routes, or nature destinations will shape your stay. The town combines a distinctive railway settlement layout with trails and outdoor activities. Birdwatching and excursion destinations by lakes are also among the themes you can use to explore Bor and its surroundings.
Getting Here and Railway History
Bor can be reached by bus, train, and car, and is located on National Road 27. Krösatåg trains stop at Bor station on the Kust till kust railway line. The town’s layout is characteristic of a railway settlement and developed from around 1900 onward. One specific landmark connected with this history is the old station house, which dates from 1902. The building houses a café.
A former inn also recalls earlier forms of transport: at Gästgivarevägen 2, it served as a coaching inn for changing horses until 1922. Another railway connection is the Ohsabanan heritage railway. It runs during the summer months between Ohs and Bor, passing through Småland’s unspoiled woodland landscape, past small lakes and meadows. As the service is seasonal, check the operator’s timetable before travelling.
Trails and Cycling Routes
The Skräddarebo recreation area lies on the outskirts of town, with nature trails for walking and hiking as well as opportunities for mountain biking. For cyclists, the Mountainbike i Bor mountain biking trail in the Skräddarebo area is described in more detail: it is 3.9 km long, classified as red, and rated as moderate. Its route includes technical trails and steep sections. There is also a 3.8 km mountain biking trail in the Skräddarebo area.
Other opportunities for exercise have a different character. Bor has a multisport arena for outdoor leisure and sports activities; Rörelseparken includes a pump track. The Skräddareborundan is a 1.6 km, flat, accessible circular walking route around a lake. These options offer different kinds of activity, from a short loop with specified route features to a moderately rated mountain biking trail with technical sections.
Nature Reserve, Lakes, and Birdwatching
Lundsbo bokskog Nature Reserve lies about 1.5 km outside Bor. There are trails for walking, hiking, and mountain biking. The area also has accessible trails with firmly compacted gravel surfaces. Nearby is the elevated Kepsmacken shelter, which has a barbecue area. The different trail and visitor facilities offer various points of reference for planning an excursion.
Fishing is available at lakes Furen and Flåren. Fish species found there include zander, eel, pike, whitefish, and perch. Furen is also home to Hyltans bathing area, with a sandy and rocky shore, shallow water, and a barbecue area. If you would rather observe or explore a lakeside landscape on foot, Södergårdsviken offers a different focus: it lies just over 1 km south of Bor, at the northern tip of Flåren. There are opportunities for birdwatching, a walk around the lake, and a birdwatching tower. Parking is available at the tower or on the access road.
Pinnarekulla, also nearby, is another birdwatching destination. This wetland is characterized by a diverse range of wildlife and birdlife. The nature destinations therefore offer different experiences: Lundsbo focuses on trails and woodland, Furen combines swimming and fishing, while Södergårdsviken and Pinnarekulla offer opportunities to observe birds.
Cultural Landscape Between Bor and Rydaholm
In the region between Bor and Rydaholm lies Getaryggarna, a cultural environment of national interest. This cultural landscape includes historic cultural routes, villages with 19th-century wooden buildings, manor environments, and an older cultural landscape. Thus, in addition to railway history and nature areas, the surroundings of Bor offer a distinctive way to explore regional architectural and cultural history.
