Nydala: Monastery, Pilgrim Paths and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Nydala
The Nydala Monastery lies on Lake Rusken and is one of Sweden’s oldest surviving Cistercian monasteries. You can focus your stay on two specific themes: the history of the monastery, church and garden, or one of the routes that end at the abbey church. The Munkaleden trail and the Rusken runt cycle route add options for walking and cycling. Route length, activity and seasonal visitor offerings are practical differences you can plan for in advance.
Monastery, Church and Garden
The monastery was founded in 1143. French Cistercian monks lived and worked there for 400 years. The abbey church is on Route 127 between Värnamo and Vrigstad; brown-and-white signs from the road point the way. You can combine this guidance with a visit to the monastery or a tour along the surrounding routes.
Nydala Monastery Garden shows what a medieval herb and spice garden at a Nordic Cistercian monastery might have looked like. Its design is based on an eighth-century monastery plan from the Abbey of Saint Gall in Switzerland. The garden thus brings together the possible historical form of such an herb garden and a specific plan from Switzerland. The church on Lake Rusken and the garden offer different highlights for a visit focused on cultural history.
Visiting Hours and Seasonal Offerings
Guided tours are offered in summer both in the abbey church and in the monastery garden. Check the current dates before your trip. The abbey church is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, from 1 April to 30 September; check the current opening hours before you travel.
The events calendar includes the historical open-air play “Det rika Nova Vallis,” which has been performed every year in August since 1993. If you would like to include it in your trip, check the dates for the relevant year. This lets you plan seasonal guided tours and a performance as separate activities, and choose your routes independently.
Walking Trails and Pilgrim Routes
The Munkaleden is 40 kilometres long. It follows the route that, according to tradition, the monks of Nydala Monastery took when visiting the nunnery in Byarum. Along the trail are information boards about nature and historic sites, as well as places for meditation. Cycling is permitted on the Munkaleden; check the current route information before cycling.
For a longer circular walk, the Munkagårdsleden can be combined with the Munkaleden. The circular route is about 90 kilometres long and starts and ends at Nydala Monastery. The Munkaleden can therefore be considered both a 40-kilometre route in its own right and part of a much longer combination. The stated distance for the circular route refers to the combination of both trails, not to the length of the Munkaleden alone.
Two other pilgrim trails also end at the abbey church: the Nydalaleden joins a larger network of pilgrim routes there. The Västra Sigfridsleden also ends at Nydala Abbey Church in the municipality of Värnamo. These endpoints make the church a clear landmark when choosing between individual trails or planning a multi-stage walk.
Cycling Around Nydala
From Nydala, you can ride the signposted Rusken runt cycle route. It is about 60 kilometres long and partly hilly. By comparison, the Munkaleden is 40 kilometres long and also open to cyclists. The information distinguishes between the options by distance and stated terrain: Rusken runt is described as partly hilly, while the Munkaleden is described as open to cycling. Check the current route information for both routes in advance.
When planning your stay, you can treat the abbey church and garden as a cultural-history highlight, then choose a suitable route. Of the shorter individual routes mentioned, the Munkaleden is 40 kilometres; Rusken runt is signposted as a cycle route of about 60 kilometres. If you are planning a longer walk, you can consider the approximately 90-kilometre circular route combining the Munkagårdsleden and the Munkaleden. The activity, route length and seasonal dates each offer different points of reference for planning your trip.
