Forsheda combines trails by Lake Sänkesjön and opportunities to get active with several historical themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Forsheda, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: walks by the water, sporting activities, or architectural and industrial history? These different interests can help you get a sense of Forsheda as a destination and plan your trip.

Getting to Forsheda

Forsheda is on Riksväg 27. The central station is served by Krösatågen trains running between Halmstad and Jönköping/Nässjö. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable before you set off. The road location and rail connections provide two different considerations for planning your journey.

Trails by Lake Sänkesjön

There are several walking and running trails by Lake Sänkesjön. In the outdoor recreation area, the trails follow the lakeshore through a landscape shaped by marshland. The trails are adapted for accessibility; some pass over wide, accessible wooden boardwalks through the marsh. The area thus includes both trails by the lake and boardwalks through the marshland. Parking for the Sänkesjön outdoor recreation area is available at Forsheda School and Forshedabadet, a few hundred metres from the lake.

Loops, cycling trails and sports

Forsheda has hiking trails and cycling trails. The Forsheda illuminated trail includes a longer loop of 1.8 km and a shorter one of 1.7 km. The two loops differ by 100 metres, so their lengths offer a small variation rather than a major difference. If you include one of the routes in your plans, you can use this specific distance as a guide.

The multi-arena in Forsheda offers, among other things, a beach volleyball court, a boules court, a street basketball court, a floorball court, pickleball and an outdoor gym. The range extends from ball and racket sports to outdoor fitness. Together with the trails, these options offer different ways to stay active during your visit; you can choose according to what you enjoy doing.

Church and runestone

The current Forsheda Church building dates from 1867 and was inaugurated in 1869. Much of the original interior furnishings have been preserved, as has the church interior’s well-preserved character. Historic furnishings include a baptismal font from the 12th century, a crucifix from the 17th century and an altarpiece from the early 18th century. The church building of the 19th century thus brings together objects from several earlier centuries.

Another early historical monument is the Forsheda Runestone, erected in the 11th century. It stands south of Riksväg 27, between Bredaryd and Forsheda. It is also a possible stopping point for paddlers: on the Storån canoe trail, you can stop at the runestone in Forsheda.

Milling and industrial history

At Forsheda Kvarnagård, information boards tell the history of the mill. The Forshedaverken Industrial Museum houses older machines and objects used and made by Forshedaverken. This adds further themes to the history of the church and runestone: the mill and the industrial past, brought to life in the museum’s collection. Travellers interested in culture can explore different historical perspectives, while the trails by Lake Sänkesjön and the sporting activities offer a different focus.
