Pilgrimage routes, religious sites and local history give a trip to Ourém several clear focal points. At the Santuário de Fátima, the memory of the Marian apparitions and pilgrimage take centre stage. Routes such as the Rota de Tomar and the 17th stage of the Caminho do Norte each have their own lengths and courses. Museums, a religious tradition and the Castelo de Ourém add regional history and architecture to the picture. This lets you plan your trip around pilgrimage routes, cultural sites or both.

Pilgrimage Sites and Religious Routes

The Santuário de Fátima is a pilgrimage site commemorating the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children. At the express request of the Apostolic See, it is a national shrine. The Capelinha das Aparições has a special role: five of the six Marian apparitions took place there, and the chapel is described as the heart of the Santuário. These details connect the history of the apparitions with a specific, named place within the shrine.

The Calvário Húngaro is also associated with a dated chapter of religious history. The Stations of the Cross and the Capela de Santo Estêvão at the Calvário Húngaro were blessed on 12 May 1964. The Via-sacra on the Caminho dos Pastorinhos begins at the Rotunda de Santa Teresa de Ourém, also known as the Rotunda Sul, and ends at the Calvário Húngaro.

The Caminhos de Fátima are a network of religious and cultural routes that begin in different places and end at the Santuário de Fátima. They provide safe and pleasant conditions for pilgrims and walkers by avoiding busy roads in favour of country paths and small rural roads. Their character can thus be distinguished from the specific route details given for individual paths.

Routes of Different Lengths

The Rota de Tomar runs between Tomar and Fátima through the municipalities of Tomar, Torres Novas and Ourém, and is 31 kilometres long. Its six-kilometre cycling variant begins in the Serra de Alburitel. This route therefore has a total distance as well as a shorter cycling option with its own starting point in the area.

Another route detail concerns the 17th stage of the Caminho do Norte. This mixed route covers 23 kilometres through the city of Ourém and ends in Cova da Iria, in the surroundings of the Santuário de Fátima. When planning, you can distinguish between the routes by their stated lengths and described characteristics, without treating them as the same route.

Museums and Regional History

The Casa do Administrador is connected with the history of the apparitions of Fátima: Jacinta, Francisco and Lúcia stayed there from 13 to 15 August 1917. Its exhibitions focus on the Concelho Ourém, particularly the period from 1850 to 1960. The Casa thus links a specific episode from 1917 with a broader view of the history of the Concelho.

The Ecomuseu do Olival was established in 1994 by restoring a derelict mill and miller's house and turning them into an ethnographic museum. The permanent exhibition of the Museu do Santuário de Fátima, formerly known as Fátima Luz e Paz, opened in August 2002 and is housed in the shrine's Reitoria building. The two institutions therefore represent different historical subjects: the ethnographic heritage of a mill and the exhibition history of the Santuário.

Architecture, Tradition and Wine

The Castelo de Ourém is considered one of the most innovative works of military architecture in Portugal in the 15th century. The Procissão do Senhor dos Passos is also deeply rooted in the Vila Medieval de Ourém. For centuries, it has drawn people seeking Christian devotion and remains a living religious tradition to this day.

Another historic building is the Ucharia do Conde. It probably dates back to the 17th century; the building is part of the complex of the former prison in the medieval Vila Medieval de Ourém. The winemaking method used for Vinho Palhete from Ourém, meanwhile, has a history stretching back eight hundred years. Architecture, religious customs and winemaking tradition thus offer different ways to explore local history.
