Mação: River Landscapes, Archaeology and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Mação
Mação brings scattered mountain ranges together in a green patchwork of landscapes. Rivers, springs, reservoirs and the Tagus shape the area, alongside river beaches and bathing areas, hiking trails and archaeological remains. Those looking to shape their stay around nature, water and history will find a range of themes to help plan their trip.
Landscape, Views and Trails
The PR4-MAC-Rota da Ortiga is an easy 11.1-kilometre loop that takes about four hours. The route passes through farmland, grazing land and fishing areas. For a different perspective, take the PR1-MAC-Rota do Cabeço da Cruz, which leads to a natural viewpoint on Cabeço da Cruz overlooking Mação.
The viewpoints each offer a different perspective, too. From the Miradouro da Serra do Bando, the view extends for more than 100 kilometres. The Miradouro do Calvário looks out over the eastern part of the municipality of Mação. Those interested in the geology of the landscape will find other notable sites: Pego da Rainha lies along a geological fault in the quartzite ridge above the Ocreza Valley. The Cascatas do Chão do Brejo are a series of waterfalls along the Ribeira de Corga do Casal, formed by the area's geological conditions.
River Beaches and Activities on the Water
The bathing areas differ in the facilities they offer. Praia Fluvial do Carvoeiro has pools for adults and children, an amphibious chair, changing facilities and lifeguards. It also holds awards and accessibility designations indicating that it is accessible. Praia Fluvial de Cardigos has a sandy area, shaded lawns, covered picnic facilities, a beach bar and a ramp for visitors with reduced mobility. Praia Fluvial de Ortiga has a floating pool, a beach football pitch and a climbing tower; canoes and pedal boats are available to rent there.
Services at Praia Fluvial do Carvoeiro are seasonal; check its awards and accessibility designations before your trip. As facilities and rentals may change, it is also worth checking the latest information for the other bathing areas. This will help you factor the differences between pools, sandy areas, picnic facilities and leisure activities into your day plans.
Local cuisine also reflects the area's connection to the river: restaurants around the Ortiga Reservoir serve dishes such as Arroz de Lampreia, Sável na Telha, grilled Achigã, Sopa à Pescador and Ensopado de Enguia. These dishes give you specific ideas if you would like to include regional cuisine in your trip.
Archaeology and History
Mação's archaeological heritage includes rock engravings along the Ribeira da Ocreza. A depiction of an equid is considered the first discovery of Palaeolithic art in the open air in southern Portugal. Buraca da Serpe also brings geology and early history together: the corridor gallery is 11.29 metres long and has an entrance in the quartzite ridge. It may have been inhabited as early as the Middle Palaeolithic.
Anta da Laginha is an archaeological site on the PR10-MAC-Rota de Cardigos Praia and is considered a notable testament to early human settlement in the area. The Roman bath at Vale de Junco extended across two levels. The identifiable rooms include the atrium, apodyterium, frigidarium, tepidarium and caldarium. The different names refer to several areas within the complex.
The fish weirs on the Tagus also tell the story of the relationship between the landscape and the local community. On the right bank, between the mouth of the Rio Frio and the Belver Dam, 22 fish weirs can be identified. Their location along this stretch of river and their number make this part of the cultural heritage particularly tangible.
Festivals and Travel Planning
Traditional summer festivities and annual festivals take place throughout the municipality and are organised by local associations. If you would like to include a festival in your trip, check the dates in advance. When looking for a hotel in Mação, it helps to decide what you want to focus on first: hiking, river beaches or archaeological sites offer different reasons to travel.
