Coruche lies in the Lezíria, in a transition zone between the Ribatejo and the Alentejo, on the plain by the Sorraia River. The river irrigates and shapes the fertile Lezíria landscape around Coruche and is a tributary of the Tagus. Extensive cork oak landscapes in the Montado define the scenery; Coruche is also one of Portugal’s most important cork-producing areas.

Trails between the river and the Montado

The Rota do Peixe is 3.124 kilometres long and connects the two banks of the Sorraia via two bridges. The Rota da Cegonha measures 4.818 kilometres and passes through the farmland of the Sorraia Valley, where storks are often found. The routes therefore differ both in length and in the surroundings described: one focuses on riverbanks and bridges, the other on the valley landscape and storks.

The PR3 CCH – Caminhos do Vale ao Montado runs between the Sorraia Valley and the extensive Montado woodlands of the municipality of Coruche. At the highest point of the route, it offers panoramic views over the Montado woodlands and part of the Sorraia Valley. Signage and conditions on all the routes mentioned may change; check the latest route information before setting out.

Near Coruche, the Açude da Agolada is designated as a local recreation area that is particularly popular in summer. This adds a seasonal attraction and another landscape to the themes of river, valley and Montado.

Museum, art and cultural heritage

The Museu Municipal de Coruche is located in the historic centre of the town and is dedicated to preserving and presenting local cultural heritage. The permanent exhibition “A Magia da mão” conveys the identity of Coruche, its people and their activities. Check before your visit whether the exhibition is still on display.

The museum includes spaces for temporary exhibitions, an auditorium and a documentation centre. Its collections cover museology, archaeology, ethnography and local history. In this way, the museum offers different ways to explore Coruche’s cultural heritage, from its exhibitions to the subjects represented in the documentation centre.

Regional cuisine and events

“Comer de Carne” is a two-day food and wine event held in November. During the event, the dish of the same name, also known as “Sopas de Carne”, is prepared in restaurants and at quintas in the region. Specific dates may vary from one edition to another.

The festivities in honour of Nossa Senhora do Castelo last 13 days. At the 2026 edition, the procession in honour of the patron saint and the historic and ethnographic parade were the highlights. The 24H BTT CCH endurance mountain biking competition is also rooted in Coruche: the 2026 programme scheduled its 16th edition for 13 and 14 June.
