Mountain ranges and waterscapes

The mountain ranges scattered across the municipality of Mação—Bando dos Santos, Bando de Codes, Santo António, Amêndoa, Galega, Águas Quentes, Alfeijoeira, Casal and Moledo—form a green mosaic of significant scenic interest. Their names reflect how widely the ranges are distributed across the municipality and give the landscape its distinctive character.

Water also shapes Mação: the springs and streams of Eiras, Coadouro, Boas Eiras, Pracana, Ocreza and Bostelim, along with the Ortiga, Pracana and Espelho de Água reservoirs and the Tagus, create riverside beaches and bathing areas for residents and tourists. Here, different landscape features come together: springs and streams, reservoirs and the river. If you are interested in nature and archaeology, the waterside areas and rock art offer two different points of interest within the same destination.

Rock art and early history

The history of the Museu de Mação began with the discovery of Bronze Age artefacts known as the “Tesouro do Porto do Concelho.” The find links the museum’s history to a specific archaeological chapter in the region. The exhibition “Do gesto à Arte” at the Museu de Mação offers another perspective on early history: it explores how gestures give rise to material things and act as expressions of creativity and communication.

The Mação Rock Art Circuit connects the Ocreza Valley, the painted Pego da Rainha rock shelter and Cobragança. The Ocreza Valley contains a Palaeolithic rock engraving dated to around 20,000 years ago. The Cobragança rock art site lies within the municipality of Mação, about 1.2 km from the village of Caratão. Several engravings remain visible on its two rock outcrops. In this way, the theme of rock art encompasses both a Palaeolithic engraving dated approximately and visible engravings at a more precisely located site.

Megaliths, trails and heritage

Castro de S. Miguel da Amêndoa is designated a National Monument and has a waymarked visitor route. In Cardigos, the Anta da Laginha megalithic monument, built of schist, forms part of the Lithos circular trail. Its low corridor is made of small blocks. The monument is associated with the gradual settlement of the interior by herding and farming communities.

Another megalithic monument is the Anta da Foz do Rio Frio in Ortiga. It has a large chamber and a corridor paved with stone slabs. It is believed to have been built around 6,000 years ago and reused until at least around 4,000 years ago. The two monuments have different architectural features: the Anta da Laginha stands out for its low corridor of small blocks, while the Anta da Foz do Rio Frio is notable for its large chamber and paved corridor.

A cultural and religious trail is also part of the PR1-MAC-Cross Head Path: the Path of the Sacred is rooted in local religious devotion. The PR1-MAC-Cross Head Path ends at the “Museum of Prehistoric and Sacred Art of the Tagus Valley.” Thus, both a trail with a religious character and a museum are among the destination’s named cultural landmarks.

Bathing areas and getting around

In 2026, Praia Fluvial de Cardigos received the “Qualidade de Ouro” seal from Quercus for excellent bathing water quality. Local culinary traditions in Mação include honey, olives and presunto. These culinary traditions add another dimension to the destination, complementing its landscape and cultural experiences.
