Mação brings together several distinct themes for travel planning: sacred architecture, archaeological history, local festival traditions and a route through the hilly landscape. The Igreja Matriz showcases architecture and tile art, while the Museu de Mação is associated with Bronze Age finds and regional collections. Along the PR1-MAC Cabeço da Cruz route, woodland, streams and views shape the landscape. This lets you plan your stay around the interests that matter most to you.

Church Architecture and Tile Art

The Igreja Matriz de Mação, also known as Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Conceição, is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (IIP), a Property of Public Interest. The late Gothic and Mannerist building has three naves beneath a wooden ceiling and a vaulted choir. The tile coverings date from the 17th century; one panel depicting John the Baptist is dated 1644. The church’s structure and furnishings give you two different ways to explore it: its architecture and its sacred tile art.

Museum and Regional History

The history of the Museu de Mação began on 6 March 1943 with the discovery of a collection of Bronze Age objects. The museum’s profile includes archaeological and historical collections, as well as archaeological and historical sites in Mação and the region. This brings both collections and sites into focus. The precisely dated beginning of the museum’s history and its broader connection to Mação and the region offer distinct perspectives. If you are interested in archaeology and local history, this focus complements the architectural and art history of the Igreja Matriz with another perspective.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The Feira dos Santos is one of Mação’s annual festivals. It is a traditional, two-hundred-year-old fair featuring a historical reenactment. Established Easter traditions in Mação include the Passos do Senhor, Holy Week and the Easter Triduum. The Santa Maria festival takes place on the first weekend of September. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for the relevant year in advance.

Landscape and Prehistoric Themes

The PR1-MAC Cabeço da Cruz route passes through hilly terrain with changing woodland and streams. At higher points, there are wide-ranging views of the natural surroundings. Terrain, vegetation and views define the route’s landscape focus.

At the Parque Pré-Histórico de Mação, visitors can experience past production processes involving agriculture, livestock farming, toolmaking and the construction of various structures. Andakatu leads workshops there on landscape change, technology and rock art. In contrast to the route, the park focuses on human production methods and the workshop topics listed above. This distinction gives you two clearly different areas of interest for planning your trip: landscape views along the route, or prehistoric production processes and rock art in the park.
