Envendos: Thermal Waters, Rock Art and the Rota dos Envendos
Accommodation in Envendos
If you are planning a hotel stay in Envendos, you can shape your trip around the things that interest you: thermal waters, archaeology, a circular walk or public swimming pools. An ancient road monument and the history of the Foral also give the place distinct points of interest. Consider which activity you want to make the focus of your stay and how much time to set aside for it in your travel plans.
Thermal waters and wellness offerings
The thermal waters of the Termas da Ladeira de Envendos emerge from the rock at 21°C. Their use has been documented for more than 100 years. The offerings include therapeutic thermal treatments, wellness services, and two- and three-day programmes for wellbeing and relaxation. When planning, the current operating status matters alongside these offerings: the Termas da Ladeira de Envendos are currently listed as closed, including for the season and operating hours. So check before travelling whether the facilities are available.
Rock art along the Ocreza
Most of the rock art depictions along the Ocreza are in Vale do Souto, Vale da Rovinhosa and the area of the Pracana Dam on the river’s right bank. These areas belong to the Freguesia of Envendos and the Concelho of Mação. Archaeological finds in the Ocreza area also include rock engravings at Ribeira da Ocreza and a depiction of an equid. The latter is considered the first discovery of Palaeolithic art in the open air in southern Portugal. For travellers interested in prehistoric art, this classification provides a particular point of interest.
Bridge and Foral: two historical points of reference
The Ponte Romana da Ladeira de Envendos was built between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD as part of an ancient road system connecting Idanha and Ródão. A much later point of reference in Envendos’ history is the Foral, granted to the place by King Manuel I on 18 May 1518. These two details mark different historical layers: ancient infrastructure on the one hand, and a Foral with a precise date on the other.
Circular walk with views of the Ocreza
The Rota dos Envendos is a circular route of approximately 15.7 km. It starts and ends at Praça da República in the centre of Envendos and climbs to Castelo Velho da Zimbreira. From there, it offers a privileged view of the Ocreza’s meanders. The circular route starts and finishes in the same square; the stated distance helps you compare the walk’s length with the rest of your travel plans. The route therefore has both a clearly defined starting and finishing point and a named viewpoint.
Swimming pools and climbing
At the seat of the Freguesia of Envendos, there are public swimming pools with a bar, a leisure area and a children’s playground. If you include the pools in your plans, check the current opening hours before visiting. Pego da Rainha offers a different focus: it is home to one of the main facilities of the Escola de Escalada de Mação. This lets you choose between a circular walk with a named viewpoint and a place with a particular connection to climbing.
