At the confluence of the Tagus and Zêzere rivers, Constância combines a history shaped by its rivers with a varied cultural offering. Whitewashed houses step down the hillside; Camões-related sites, churches and the river landscape tell different sides of the town’s story. There are several themes to choose from when planning your trip: literary history, architecture, astronomy and activities on the water.

River History and Camões

In the 14th century, Constância was an important river port and a busy trading hub. The Museu dos Rios e das Artes Marítimas illustrates the rivers’ economic significance and their close ties to the local population. Miniature boats also keep alive the memory of the former Varino river transport tradition.

Constância is associated with Luís Vaz de Camões, the 16th-century Portuguese poet and author of “The Lusiads,” who lived here for a time. The Jardim-Horto de Camões contains all the flora mentioned in his works, comprising a total of 52 species. The garden also includes the Jardim de Macau, a Ptolemaic Planetarium in the open-air auditorium, and a tiled panel depicting Camões’ travels. The plants, garden areas and images thus reflect different aspects of the town’s cultural heritage.

Festivals also draw on this history: the Pomonas Camonianas celebrate Camões every year on 10 June with events depicting the Middle Ages. The Festas de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, also held annually around Easter, include a procession with decorated boats. The Festa e a Bênção dos Barcos is part of a religious observance that dates back at least two hundred years.

Churches and Townscape

The Casa-Memória de Camões was built over the consolidated ruins of a 16th-century house, which was designated an imóvel de interesse público in 1983. Construction work on the Igreja da Misericórdia continued throughout the second half of the 17th century; it was designated an imóvel de interesse público in 1978. Its interior is entirely covered with 17th-century blue-and-yellow tiles in geometric patterns.

The Igreja Matriz de Constância, also known as the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, was built over several centuries, beginning with an earlier chapel. The main part of the building dates from the time of D. João V. Its altar of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, from the second half of the 18th century, is associated with the annual Easter procession and the blessing of boats and vehicles on the Zêzere and Tagus rivers. In the late 19th century, José Malhoa painted an allegory on the church ceiling.

The townscape also includes the public clock tower, with its clock dating from the late 18th century: it has just one hand to show the hours. The Miradouro do Tempo offers a viewpoint over Constância. The iron bridge has a 200-metre-long roadway and stands 23 metres above the river.

Astronomy and the River Landscape

The Centro Ciência Viva de Constância – Parque de Astronomia offers astronomy activities and other scientific observations. Its observatory has five movable domes housing telescopes of different designs and apertures. The planetarium can simulate the observable sky for any time, date and latitude. Telescope observations and planetarium depictions of the sky thus offer different ways to explore astronomy.

Praia Fluvial de Constância is on the left bank of the Zêzere and has a sandy area of 3,500 square metres. Nearby are a picnic area, a playground, free parking, toilets and green spaces; check seasonal conditions before your visit. Praia Fluvial meets the applicable requirements for bathing water quality and the supervision of bathers. Check the conditions for the current bathing season before your visit.

During the bathing season, Praia Fluvial offers the Praia com Animação programme, with workshops, treasure hunts, boat trips, games, dance, visual arts and a beach library. The activities may vary from year to year. For a different view of the river landscape, the Grande Rota do Zêzere follows the river from its source in the Serra da Estrela to its mouth in the Tagus at Constância.

The municipality also offers nature experiences and learning opportunities: Parque Ambiental de Santa Margarida is an environmental learning and activity park of about six hectares in a rural part of Santa Margarida da Coutada. It opened to the public in April 2002. In the municipality, Borboletário Tropical keeps tropical butterflies alive year-round in a warm, humid environment.
