Constância between the Tagus and Zêzere rivers
Accommodation in Constância
Constância lies at the confluence of the Tagus and Zêzere rivers. White houses cling to a hillside; the river landscape and townscape shape the character of this Portuguese destination. The town offers different focal points to help you plan your visit: the rivers and their history, astronomical activities, cultural traditions and trails in the surrounding area.
Rivers and townscape
Praia Fluvial de Constância is on the left bank of the Zêzere. Its facilities include a 3,500 m² sandy area and an access ramp for people with reduced mobility. This makes the river beach a practical place to visit for anyone who wants to make the river landscape part of their stay.
Miradouro do Tempo also offers views over Constância. Together with the hillside setting of the white houses, it shows the town from a different perspective than the riverbanks do. If you plan to spend most of your time in town, you can combine this viewpoint with Constância’s cultural attractions.
River culture and traditions
Museu dos Rios e das Artes Marítimas preserves the cultural heritage of Constância’s former river-based economy. This includes traditions of river transport, shipbuilding and fishing. The rivers are therefore not only part of the landscape, but also a touchstone for the town’s history and cultural heritage.
One living tradition is Festa de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem. It reaches its peak on Easter Monday with the blessing of the boats; the festival is associated with a devotion that is at least two hundred years old. At Pomonas Camonianas, fruits and flowers associated with the tradition of Camões are exhibited and offered for sale in Constância. Another local connection to Camões can be found at Jardim-Horto de Camões: it includes 52 plant species referenced by Camões in his work, as well as Jardim de Macau and a Ptolemaic planetarium in the open-air auditorium.
Handcrafted Bonequinhas are also part of local tradition. The dolls are associated with the families of river boatmen and were made from fabric scraps. Constância honey is linked to the spring blossoms of rosemary, wild rosemary and orange groves on both sides of the Tagus.
Astronomy and trails
Centro Ciência Viva de Constância – Parque de Astronomia offers activities focused on astronomy. Its facilities include five mobile domes with telescopes of different apertures and designs. If astronomy is one of the reasons for your trip, the centre provides a clear thematic focus for planning your stay.
The Encosta do Zêzere walking trail starts and ends in Constância and is 7 kilometres long. Check the route details locally before setting off.
Further afield is Parque Ambiental de Santa Margarida, a recreational and educational area of about 6 hectares in the rural surroundings of the Freguesia Santa Margarida da Coutada. The park is home to Borboletário Tropical. Visits there are accompanied by a guide and last no more than 45 minutes. This makes the park a separate option when planning a trip beyond Constância’s townscape.
Getting there and finding a hotel
Constância is connected to the road network via the A23 and can be reached via the Linha do Leste, the eastern railway line. Which connection suits you depends on your travel plans. Then compare the specific hotel offers and their locations before deciding where to stay.
