In 1845, the Junta de Paróquia de Salvaterra de Magos initiated the Aforamento process in Foros de Salvaterra. The aim was to clear scrubland for cultivation and make the soil arable. The division of the land enabled new forms of land management and the settlement of the population. This process links the town’s history to the use of the land and the development of its settlement.

Agriculture, Landscape and Water

At the beginning of the 20th century, Foros de Salvaterra had extensive vineyards as well as large eucalyptus and pine forests. The Barragem de Magos adds a later chapter in water management to the history of the town and region: it was completed in 1934 and contributed to the region’s economic development and the growth of the town. Its construction served to protect against flooding, drain land and irrigate the Paúl de Magos. The reservoir covers 90 hectares. Carp and Pimpões are also caught at the Barragem.

River Fish and Regional Cuisine

The cuisine of Foros de Salvaterra is shaped by the Lezíria, the Charneca and the Tagus. River fish featured in the regional cuisine include Sável, Saboga, Barbo, Fataça, lamprey and eel. They are used, among other things, in soups, Açordas and Molhatas, or fried. This reflects the culinary variety found both in the different fish species and in the ways they are prepared. Those interested in local food culture will find a distinctive way to experience the town here, alongside its agricultural history and traditions.

Traditions and Cultural Heritage

Local traditions are based primarily on bullfighting, Campinos and equestrian skills, agriculture, and river or Avieira culture. Folklore groups from Foros de Salvaterra and Várzea Fresca recreate the traditional costumes of this Freguesia. Depictions of the local Campino outfit show a horseman holding a Pampilho aloft. The Igreja Matriz is also among the heritage landmarks of Foros de Salvaterra. Together, these themes offer insight into different aspects of the local cultural heritage.
