Almeirim combines an open landscape in the Tagus Valley with a rich local history. Sacred architecture, regional wine experiences and leisure activities offer something for different kinds of trips; you can tailor your stay to culture, scenery or activities.

The Tagus Plain and Wine Country

Almeirim lies on an open plain in the Tagus Valley. The banks of the Tagus and the Ribeira de Alpiarça are places of great tourist interest around Almeirim. Both riverside landscapes and the broad plain shape the region.

The Tejo Wine Route 118 is about 150 kilometres long. It crosses the Vinhos do Tejo wine region on the left bank of the Tagus and passes through seven municipalities, including Almeirim. Quinta da Alorna offers a direct connection to local wine production: it has 220 hectares of vineyards in the Tejo wine region, in Almeirim.

History and Sacred Architecture

Almeirim was founded in 1411, when Dom João I ordered its establishment in connection with the creation of the royal Coutada Real de Almeirim. Its boundaries were defined in 1424. The Portuguese Cortes also convened in Almeirim twice. Dom João III called them to swear in Prince Dom João; Cardinal Dom Henrique later summoned them over the succession to the throne.

The Igreja Matriz de S. João Baptista has a single nave. Its plain façade features Baroque elements, and the church has a bell tower. The Ermida do Calvário also has a single nave; its wall and vault paintings depict the Passion of Christ. During the procession of Senhor Jesus dos Passos, the religious ceremony known as Encontro takes place in the Ermida.

São João Baptista is celebrated in Almeirim every year on 24 June with a pilgrimage. The Museu Municipal de Almeirim is located in the Centro Coordenador de Transportes building. It preserves and presents the municipality’s movable cultural heritage.

Wine, Leisure and Activities

A guided tour of Quinta da Alorna includes Vinha do Bosque, the winery and the barrel room. The programme also includes a wine tasting on the palace balcony and a visit to the wine shop. The programme may change; confirm the details before your visit.

For relaxation and fishing, Barragem dos Gagos in Fazendas de Almeirim offers a green setting. Facilities include parking, barbecue areas and fishing spots. Kartódromo de Almeirim offers a different kind of activity: its 920-metre track is homologated by the Federação de Automobilismo e Karting (FPAK) to Grade II.

When planning your trip, the wine experiences differ in scope: the Tejo Wine Route 118 passes through seven municipalities and offers a regional perspective; the guided tour of Quinta da Alorna brings together a wine tasting, winery, barrel room and shop at a named location. If you are looking for a hotel, consider whether a broader view of the wine region or a specific tour programme would better suit your stay.
