Sardoal can be explored via hiking trails, churches, old mills and regional crafts. White houses adorned with flowers sit on a hill; the streets of the older part of town, paved with river pebbles, are considered particularly picturesque. This brings landscapes and cultural history together within a compact area.

Hiking trails with different focuses

The PR1 – Na Rota do Javali starts in Andreus and follows the stream toward Vale da Amarela and S. Simão. Along the way, it passes the Capela dos Barbilongos. On the PR2 – Trilho do Pastor, the history of the route helps guide you: it follows the former link between Abrantes and Sardoal. It also passes the Sobreiro da Dona Maria, considered one of the largest cork oaks in the region.

The PR3 – Do Pão ao Vinho passes old watermills and runs through the vineyards of Quinta do Vale do Armo. The PR4 – Via Romana offers a different historical connection: it passes the Roman paving at Casal da Graça and the Capela de São Bartolomeu, and ends at the Igreja Paroquial dos Valhascos. The PR5 – Caminho da Moura Encantada focuses on the stream and water engineering; the route follows the stream to the Barragem da Lapa.

Crafts are also part of the trail experience. The PR5 leads to Artelinho in Santa Clara. There, flax is processed into thread and woven on wooden looms into blankets and cloths; baskets are also made from willow. Those who want to experience the landscape in a different way can find it on the PR6 – Calcorrear dos Resineiros, which passes through pine landscapes inhabited by rare species such as the black stork. The GR44 – SRD/VLR Grande Rota da Prata e do Ouro passes the Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado river beach and also follows the Ribeira do Codes. Collections of river pebbles there are described as traces of former silver and gold mining.

The trails therefore offer different highlights: streams and a reservoir, vineyards and mills, Roman paving or pine landscapes. When choosing, you can consider whether you would rather focus on nature, traces of historic routes or craft traditions along the way.

Churches, art and religious heritage

The Igreja Matriz do Sardoal was founded in the last years of the 14th century and altered several times over the following centuries. Despite later modifications, the Igreja Matriz in the parish of São Tiago and São Mateus also displays traces of architectural styles ranging from Gothic to the present day. In Portuguese art history, the workshop of Mestre do Sardoal represents the transition from Gothic to Renaissance and is considered part of the “Primitivos Portugueses.” The Tábuas do Mestre do Sardoal comprise seven oil paintings on oak panels.

The Centro de Interpretação da Semana Santa e do Património Religioso presents religious and artistic heritage in an educational, interactive way. This includes a virtual activity in which visitors create a flower carpet. The Procissão do Senhor da Misericórdia, also known as Fogaréus, offers a living connection to Semana Santa: it takes place on Maundy Thursday as part of the celebrations and is accompanied by more than 600 lamps. Access to the Igreja da Misericórdia is restricted.

Another historical connection leads to Santiago de Montalegre: the Antiga Igreja de SĂŁo Tiago was part of the Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela and was frequently visited in the Middle Ages by pilgrims on their religious journeys. The Moinhos de Entrevinhas add four windmills, built at the end of the 19th century, to the cultural heritage. Beside them is a 6.50-metre-high and 3.20-metre-wide panoramic swing with views over Vale do Armo.

The annual calendar, wine and getting there

The Festas do Concelho de Sardoal take place every September and include a craft fair featuring regional products. Cozinha Fervida also has its roots in the past dietary habits of the poorer rural population: leftovers from other meals were used to prepare it. Cellar tours and wine tastings can be booked at Quinta Vale do Armo; reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

Sardoal is part of the Rota da EN2, which crosses Portugal’s inland region for more than 738 kilometres, from Chaves to Faro. For a road journey from the coast, the route follows the A1, the Torres Novas exit, the A23 and the Abrantes exit; from there, it continues for about four kilometres along the EN2. Sardoal can be reached by train via the Linha da Beira Baixa and Abrantes station.

When planning your stay, you can decide what to focus on first: hiking, art and churches, religious traditions, or crafts and wine. This lets you connect your search for a hotel in Sardoal with the experiences you want to make time for.
