Alcanena: Karst Spring, Trails and Museums
Accommodation in Alcanena
At the foot of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, an area designated as a natural park, lies Alcanena. At the source of the Rio Alviela, cold, crystal-clear water emerges from the depths of the Maciço Calcário Estremenho. The spring is also connected to Lisbon’s water supply: historically, it played an important role through the Aqueduto do Alviela, built in 1878.
Spring, Karst and Nature Experiences
The Carsoscópio is part of the Centro Ciência Viva de Alviela and presents the Geódromo, Carso and Quiroptário exhibitions. The PR1 ACN – Rota Olhos d'Água do Alviela also focuses on the landscape around the spring: this interpretive trail runs from the source of the Alviela to the sinkhole of the Ribeira dos Amiais. Along the route, a karst window reveals the underground course of the Ribeira dos Amiais, as well as several levels of limestone caves.
Praia Fluvial dos Olhos d'Água has a swimming area, a picnic park, a children’s playground and a sand sports court. This offers a range of ways to spend time by the water. For nature enthusiasts, the “Noite dos morcegos” activity offers a different perspective on the caves: participants can observe the bat colonies living there using remote-controlled infrared cameras and ultrasonic detectors. The activity is seasonal and runs from April to September. If you are planning to take part, check in advance whether it will be running on the date of your visit.
Trails Between the Spring and Cultural Heritage
The routes have different focuses. The PR1 ACN – Rota Olhos d'Água do Alviela runs from the spring to the sinkhole of the Ribeira dos Amiais. The PR8 ACN – Entre o Aqueduto e o Alviela starts at Praia Fluvial dos Olhos de Água, near the source of the Rio Alviela, and follows the Aqueduto do Alviela. Some sections overlap with routes in the Centro de BTT de Alcanena – Nascentes dos Olhos D’Água. The GR54 – Grande Rota do Carso runs through the municipality of Alcanena. The options described range from a trail between two named natural features to a route that crosses the municipality.
Museums and Local Heritage
The Museu Municipal de Alcanena brings together several themes from the area’s history. Its tannery collection is considered unique in Portugal for its technical, scientific and industrial significance. The local history collection also includes rails from the “Rata Cega” train, which operated in Alcanena at the end of the 19th century, as well as spinning equipment from Minde. Archaeological finds from the area date from the Palaeolithic, 45,000 years ago, to the modern era.
The Museu da Boneca displays around 7,000 dolls and figurines in different shapes, sizes and materials. The museum includes the interactive “Hospital de Bonecas”, where visitors can watch the collection’s owner repair toys. Check before your visit whether you can see this demonstration on your chosen date.
At the Museu de Aguarela Roque Gameiro, works change as part of a programme that includes permanent exhibitions. The museum also offers a space for drawing and watercolour painting. The Museu Rural e Etnográfico de Espinheiro offers another way to discover past ways of life, with insights into traditional clothing, household objects and agricultural tools.
Alcanena’s architectural history can also be explored at specific sites. The Igreja de S. Pedro has revivalist features, and its façade portal is neo-Gothic. The historic centre around Praça Marechal Carmona includes buildings from the early 20th century with wrought-iron balconies. The aqueducts of Louriceira include, in particular, the Arcada do Vale; they form part of the municipality’s architectural heritage and industrial archaeology.
