Accommodation in Alcanena
Alcanena lies at the foot of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, which are classified as a natural park. In the town, churches, buildings from the industrialisation period and museums shape the landscape; nearby, hiking trails add to the options. If you are looking for a hotel in Alcanena, these cultural and natural themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Historic architecture and the history of tanning
Alcanena grew considerably in the 19th century, when several tanneries and other leather-tanning factories were established in the region. Many notable buildings date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the historic centre around Praça Marechal Carmona, buildings from the early 20th century form an ensemble that includes wrought-iron balconies, windows and doors.
Igreja de S. Pedro in the centre is a church in the revivalist style. It was inaugurated on 17 July 1921 and is distinguished by its Neo-Gothic portal. Inside are an 18th-century image of the patron saint, S. Pedro, and a large crucifix from Mosteiro das Francesinhas. Biblioteca Municipal de Alcanena is also associated with a former use: it is housed in a former agricultural storage and shed building dating from 1903.
Museums and cultural venues
Museu Municipal de Alcanena opened on 4 October 2024 in a building intended for a tannery museum. If you are planning a visit, check the current visitor arrangements before travelling.
Museu da Boneca displays a collection of around 7,000 dolls and figurines that visitors can see. The museum includes the interactive Hospital de Bonecas, where visitors can watch toys being repaired. The collection and repair workshop offer different points of interest: one focuses on the variety of dolls and figurines, while the other shows the process of restoring toys.
Cine-Teatro S. Pedro is a cultural and events venue in the centre of Alcanena. It has an auditorium with seating for 342 people and an exhibition area. As the programme may change, check in advance which events coincide with your visit.
Viewpoints and trails
Notable viewpoints in Alcanena include Miradouro Joaquim Ramos Vieira and Miradouro do Alto do Lavradio. The municipal hiking trail network includes marked routes homologated by the Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal. As route availability and conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.
The 2 km Percurso Pedestre dos Olhos de Água do Alviela is also located near Alcanena. The trail is associated with several geological features typical of karst areas. There, you can see the Ribeira dos Amiais disappear into the limestone and re-emerge at the surface after an underground course. This specific natural phenomenon sets the trail apart from the sights in the town centre.
Weekly market and planning
The weekly market in the Freguesia de Alcanena takes place every Wednesday beside Bairro Timor Lorosae, unless the municipality designates another suitable location. If you include a visit to the market in your day’s plans, bear this possible change of location in mind. Together, the museums, historic buildings and trails give you a range of themes to guide your travel plans in Alcanena.
