Coimbra: University, Monasteries and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Coimbra
The visitor route at Castelo de Montemor-o-Velho is circular and can begin at any point. A trip through Coimbra can take in different sides of the region: its university and monasteries, river landscapes and geological features, routes through natural areas, and regional specialities.
University, Monasteries and Culture
The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290. UNESCO describes the University of Coimbra – Alta and Sofia as an exceptional example of a university city. Another place where history and natural history come together is the Jardim Botânico: it covers more than 13.5 hectares and was created to complement the study of natural history and medicine at the university.
The monasteries each have their own distinct character. At Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha, visitors can access an area that includes the ruins and an interpretation centre. Archaeological finds from the excavations are displayed there. Mosteiro de Lorvão offers a contextualised route through the gate, church and cloister, as well as a new museum interpretation centre.
Mosteiro de Lorvão is also associated with the production of manuscripts in its scriptorium. The Apocalypse of Lorvão is particularly well known and has been recognised as UNESCO documentary heritage. Visitors interested in the history of writing will find a tangible link to an outstanding manuscript alongside the monastery’s architecture.
Portugal dos Pequenitos features scale models across six themed areas. These include regional houses, monumental Portugal, Coimbra, the Portuguese island territories and Portuguese-speaking countries. The themes therefore range from regional architecture to connections beyond Portugal.
River, Hiking Trails and Landscapes
At the Praia Fluvial de Palheiros e Zorro river beach, visitors can go kayaking, canoeing and fishing, and play beach volleyball. As information about activities may change, check the details before making plans. MONDECO offers sustainable sightseeing trips on the Mondego aboard a comfortable, quiet and environmentally friendly solar-powered boat. Check information about the operator and its offer before travelling.
The routes offer a variety of landscapes and distances. The PR6 FIG Rota das Salinas is a 4.6-kilometre circular route in the Mondego estuary. It passes between centuries-old salt pans and fish-farming ponds in wetlands designated as a Ramsar site. The PR3 FIG Rota da Boa Viagem is about 12.6 kilometres long and forms a circular route through the heart of the Serra da Boa Viagem. It showcases the biodiversity and geological features of the protected Cabo Mondego Natural Monument. By comparison, the PR6 is considerably shorter; both trails are circular. Maintenance work may affect route information, so check current conditions before setting out.
Another route starts at Castelo da Lousã. The PR5 LSA first passes the Capela do Sr. dos Aflitos, then follows a long forest trail towards Porto Pisão. It then descends along the Ribeira de São João, from where Aldeia do Xisto do Talasnal can be seen. Gondramaz also has the low-barrier “Caminho do Xisto Acessível de Gondramaz”, designed to offer people with disabilities an accessible circular route.
In Coimbra District, the Serra da Lousã reaches 1,205 metres at Alto de Trevim. It stretches across the municipalities of Miranda do Corvo, Lousã, Góis and Penela. Another geological feature is the Livraria do Mondego: it consists of Ordovician quartzites and has been classified as a geomonument at the outcrop level.
Regional Specialities and Stargazing
Pastel de Tentúgal is associated with the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Natividade, also known as Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Tentúgal. Its first written mention dates back to 1611. It is characterised by a thin, crisp puff-pastry shell and an egg filling. Mel da Serra da Lousã honey has held protected designation of origin status since 1996; it is described as dark amber in colour, with a dense consistency and a robust flavour.
The Dark Sky® Aldeias do Xisto initiative offers opportunities for observing the sky, planets, stars and constellations thanks to favourable conditions. It covers seven municipalities in the Coimbra region: Arganil, Góis, Lousã, Miranda do Corvo, Oliveira do Hospital, Pampilhosa da Serra and Penela. If you are planning around specific dates, it is worth checking which municipalities are currently included and what stargazing opportunities are available.
