Praia De Mira combines a fine sandy beach with dune and lagoon landscapes and a strong fishing tradition. When planning your stay, it helps to first decide what to focus on: the beach and water sports, nature watching or the history of fishing. The different places and themes offer practical ways to make that choice.

Beach, Dunes and Water

Praia De Mira’s bathing beach is about one kilometre long and has fine white sand. At the southern end of the promenade, an elevated boardwalk leads to a beach with a natural line of dunes. From there, you can see lagoons, woodland, dunes and the ocean all at once. Praia De Mira’s primary dune is also notable for its diverse vegetation.

Praia de Mira Sul has a shorter sandy beach; the sea conditions there are better suited to surfing and other water sports. If you are choosing a beach for a particular water sport, these conditions are a useful distinction. Numerous bird species can also be observed on the fine white beaches and along the boardwalks through the dunes. Sightings are seasonal and variable, so nature watching may differ depending on when you travel.

Lagoa da Barrinha has calm waters that are well suited to sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. Water conditions and permitted activities may vary, so check them before your visit if you are planning one of these activities.

Nature and Cycle Routes

The Viveiros are part of a Site of Community Importance. The protected habitats there are significant because of the plant and animal species found in them. Visitors can observe the natural habitats of more than 200 species in the Viveiros; scientific information is available at each habitat. This makes it possible to connect observations with the habitats where the species live.

The Pista Ciclopedonal in the municipality of Mira is 38 kilometres long and is integrated into the Rota da Costa Atlântica, which is part of the EuroVelo network. A cycle and walking route in the municipality of Mira goes around the Mira and Barrinha lagoons and runs alongside reed beds, meadows, dunes, beaches and a lush pine forest. The route offers both a specific length and network connection, as well as a varied landscape to explore when planning a cycling or walking trip.

Fishing Tradition and History

Palheiros de Mira | Museu | Posto de Turismo is a multisensory place where you can discover the stories, traditions and cultures of the people who have made this area their home. It also presents traditional arts of the past and their connection with the region, including Arte Xávega.

In Praia De Mira, Arte Xávega is a tourist attraction and a living spectacle. With this traditional fishing method, fishermen head out to sea in a special, crescent-shaped wooden boat. Using large, carefully made nets, they drive shoals of fish towards the beach. The boat, nets and catch all form part of this local tradition.

Memórias da Praia Antiga depicts Praia de Mira in the mid-20th century: the 1:32 scale model is a handcrafted wooden work of art made by former fishermen who are now artisans. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição tells another chapter of the town’s history. It was founded in 1843; its original building was made entirely of wood on stilts and used the construction technique of the Palheiros.

The Festa do Pescador also brings together tradition and the lagoon landscape. During the procession, the figures are carried on typical boats across the Barrinha to the centre, where an open-air mass is held. Since procession arrangements may change, check the event information for the relevant date before visiting for the festival.

Facilities and Travel Season

In 2026, Praia De Mira received the Blue Flag for the 40th consecutive time. Praia De Mira also has a beach library and areas for environmental education. Since these facilities may change, check their current status for your travel dates before your trip.
