Figueira da Foz lies at the mouth of the Mondego and combines an especially extensive sandy beach with maritime and cultural attractions. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether beaches and water, historic buildings or cycling will be the focus of your stay. These different interests lead to different sides of the same destination.

Beach, sailing and cycling

The Porto de Recreio da Figueira da Foz has 200 berths for boats measuring 6 to 15 metres in length. The marina also has workshops for repairing boat hulls and engines. Sailing and powerboating championship events are held in Figueira da Foz. If you want to plan your trip around a competition, check the specific event dates.

The beach and nearby surroundings also offer their own points of interest for planning a trip. Figueira da Foz has an especially extensive sandy beach. Nearby is Cabo Mondego: a limestone outcrop at the western end of the Serra da Boa Viagem, between the beaches of Murtinheira and Figueira da Foz. The beach and this distinctive geological site are different aspects of the coastal landscape.

For cyclists, Figueira da Foz is the entry point to EuroVelo 1 in the Coimbra region. This adds a wider regional route perspective to the beach and water sports, without requiring a particular schedule or specific stage.

Historic buildings and architecture

The Forte de Santa Catarina was built in the late 16th century to defend the mouth of the Mondego. Its triangular structure comprises three curtain walls, a demi-bastion and two irregular bastions.

The Pelourinho da Figueira da Foz is classified as a National Monument and was built in 1782. It is a Solomonic column made of Lioz limestone. Its monument status, construction date, form and material give the structure a clear historical and architectural context.

Casa do Paço also brings together architectural history and an unusual decorative ensemble. D. João de Melo, Bishop-Count of Coimbra, had the house built between 1690 and 1704; it belonged to the Figueira da Foz entail. Four rooms on the upper floor contain a collection of approximately 6,700 Dutch Delft tiles, each with an individual image. The approximate number and the distribution across the rooms help give an idea of the scale and arrangement of this distinctive feature.

The former Santo António Convent, also called Igreja da Ordem Terceira de S. Francisco, was founded in 1527. The Igreja do Antigo Convento de Santo António houses carved altarpieces from the Mosteiro de Seiça and Mannerist paintings in the high choir. Both names refer to the same church; the artworks mentioned are different elements of its interior.

Cultural venues, collections and city life

The Centro de Artes e Espectáculos includes four exhibition halls, an art school, a large and a small auditorium, rehearsal rooms, a courtyard and an open-air amphitheatre. The Edifício da Assembleia Figueirense continues its cultural and social activities and is considered a landmark of Figueira da Foz’s recent history. Both venues complement the historic buildings with cultural facilities and the city’s ongoing social life.

The Museu Municipal Santos Rocha has permanent collections of religious and contemporary art, numismatics, Indo-Portuguese furniture, ethnography, weapons and archaeology. Another way to explore the city’s history is the Quartel da Imagem, which houses the Municipal Photographic Archive and exhibition halls. If you plan your visit around these venues, check current visitor arrangements in advance.

In nearby Buarcos, the Núcleo Museológico do Mar focuses on fishing, cod fishing, maritime life, art and faith. Guided visits are available by prior appointment. This museum visit is organised differently from exploring the historic buildings in Figueira da Foz independently.

The Mercado Municipal Engenheiro Silva has stalls selling fresh fish, regional products, fruit, vegetables and flowers. Since 2004, the market has been classified as a property of public interest. Its current market offerings and heritage status give two different reasons to include it when exploring city life.

Another activity is the Parque Aventura in Figueira da Foz, which has six high ropes course circuits at heights of 3 to 12 metres. The details about the courses and heights describe what is on offer; as operating details can change, check current visitor arrangements if you are basing your plans on them. This allows you to balance cultural visits, cycling and a high ropes activity according to your own interests.
