Tapéus lies in the Serra do Sicó, at the western foot of Monte Rabaçal. The village is situated in a valley with gentle landscape features and beside a watercourse. If you are considering Tapéus as a destination, these different landscape features can help you understand the character of the place.

Location and Getting There

Tapéus is easily accessible via Estrada Nacional No. 10, now known as the IC2. This road reference adds a specific route to the geographical description. When planning your trip, you can consider the landscape setting and road access together.

Local History and the Igreja Matriz

The first documented mention of the Tapéus area dates from 1111. This early date refers to the area, not the church: the Igreja Matriz was built in the 16th century. It belonged to the Order of Christ, with which Tapéus was closely associated for many years. The church was altered in the 17th, 19th and 20th centuries. Thus, the early mention of the area and the later building history of the church represent different historical periods.

The main chapel features a distinctive architectural detail: its rib vault dates from the mid-16th century, and the ribs bear the coat of arms of the Order of Christ. In a rib vault, the surfaces are divided by the intersecting ribs. The coat of arms links this architectural feature to the history of the order. The Capela do Sacramento dates from the 18th century, adding another period to the building history of the Igreja Matriz.

Landscape and Trails

The Algar de Dona Justa is on the upper slope above Casal Cimeiro. This location provides a specific reference point in the terrain. For hiking enthusiasts, the Grande Rota Terras de Sicó is also a regional point of reference: the 189-kilometre circular route passes through the Sicó limestone massif, and Tapéus is marked on its overview map. Most of the Grande Rota’s trails can be covered on foot or by mountain bike. The stated distance refers to the entire circular route, while the usage information applies to the vast majority of its trails. Before setting out, check the signage and trail conditions so you can adapt your plans to the circumstances.

Crafts and Festival Information

A local craft is also part of the picture of Tapéus. A statement based on data from March 2023 records that, at that time, Franquelim Simões Martins was still building dry-stone walls in the parish of Tapéus. Dry-stone walling means building walls without mortar, adding a different craft-related aspect to the history of the church.

For timing your trip, local festival information offers two dates in August: the Festival de Folclore de Tapéus is associated with the month, while the Festa do Santíssimo Sacramento takes place on the first or second Sunday in August. Check the programme for your intended year of travel before planning your stay around these dates.
