Armazéns: Salt Pans, Salt History and Nature
Accommodation in Armazéns
Armazéns brings together the history of salt production and trails through a diverse wetland. The Núcleo Museológico do Sal explores the centuries-old relationship between people and the salt pans of Figueira da Foz; the trails pass through salt-pan landscapes and salt marshes along the Mondego Estuary. If you are looking for hotels in Armazéns, these themes can help you plan your trip around the experiences that interest you.
Salt-pan landscapes and trails along the Mondego
The 4.6-kilometre Rota das Salinas is a circular trail through the Mondego Estuary. It passes between centuries-old salt pans and fish-farming ponds. The area's wetland characteristics led to its designation as a RAMSAR site. Another trail description is for the Rota Pedestre das Salinas: it is about five kilometres long and runs through the salt-marsh ecosystem. One route is explicitly described as circular, while the other focuses on its approximate length and walk through the salt marshes.
The Rota das Salinas starts and ends at the Salina Municipal do Corredor da Cobra. The recommended starting point is the area next to the Núcleo Museológico do Sal and the salt-pan storehouse; the route initially passes through the Salina do Corredor da Cobra. It also includes a path to a birdwatching point, the Observatório de Aves. Waders and seabirds can be observed there. The salt pan encompasses different environments and habitats with great biodiversity, particularly among the birds that live there throughout the year.
The plant life is also part of the character of the Salina do Corredor da Cobra: Salicórnia grows there spontaneously. In this context, the so-called “green salt”, known locally as “cachelro”, is mentioned. The experiences described range from the water and salt ponds to the habitats the area provides for birds and other species.
Salt history and cultural experiences
The Núcleo Museológico do Sal opened on 17 August 2007. Its purpose is to interpret, promote and share the centuries-old relationship between people and the salt pans of Figueira da Foz. The museum also offers a river route through the Mondego River estuary. A procedure to designate the Salina do Corredor da Cobra as a Monument of Municipal Interest includes the Armazém de Sal and the Núcleo Museológico do Sal.
Restoration of the Salina do Corredor da Cobra began in 2003; it resumed full operation that same year. This timeline highlights another aspect of the salt landscape: alongside the long-standing relationship between people and salt production, the salt pan's more recent development is also part of its history.
Editions of “Marnoto por um Dia” in 2023 and 2026 invited families to learn about the traditional art of salt production alongside the marnotos of the Salina do Corredor da Cobra. Specific dates vary by edition; check the dates for the relevant programme when planning your trip. Anniversary editions, including those in 2023 and 2025, also featured “A safra à moda antiga”, a historical reenactment in which participants carried salt from the salt pan to the storehouse.
The 19th edition of “(A) Gosto com Sabor a Sal” took place in 2026 at the Núcleo Museológico do Sal in Armazéns de Lavos. The programme brought together cultural, scientific, environmental education and health-related activities. In 2026, “Salina Criativa” included workshops on making a rodilha, preparing bath salts, folding an origami flamingo and the Salina Criativa laboratory. The specific workshop programme may vary; if you would like to plan your trip around one of these activities, check the dates and details for the relevant edition.
