Figueira Da Foz: Atlantic Coast, Culture and Salt Pans
Accommodation in Figueira Da Foz
Figueira da Foz lies at the mouth of the Mondego, where it flows into the Atlantic. The coast, waterscape and diverse cultural heritage shape the experience of a visit: Praia do Cabedelo is a hub for water sports and dunes, while salt pans, museums and historic buildings offer further perspectives on the area. Nature lovers also have various ways to explore the landscape.
Cabedelo and the Atlantic Coast
Praia do Cabedelo lies south of the Mondego estuary. Wooden boardwalks lead through the surrounding dunes to the beach. Visitors can surf, kitesurf and bodyboard there. Several schools cater to visitors who want to learn one of these sports. Depending on your interests, a visit to the beach can combine time enjoying your own activity with an introduction to water sports.
The cliffs of Cabo Mondego reveal another side of the coastal landscape: Europe’s largest Jurassic outcrop is exposed there. The rock is between 185 and 140 million years old. Those interested in the region’s geological history can get a tangible glimpse here of a much earlier stage in its formation.
Salt Pans, Estuary and Trails
The PR6 FIG – Rota das Salinas is a 4.6-kilometre circular trail. It passes through the Mondego estuary, between centuries-old salt pans and fish farms in a Ramsar wetland. Parque Florestal da Serra da Boa Viagem also has forest roads, forestry tracks, and walking and cycling trails.
A visit to the Núcleo Museológico do Sal includes the interpretation centre, the salt storehouse, the Marinha do Corredor da Cobra salt pan, the Pedarium and a walking trail. Salt production is celebrated there as a living activity connected to the landscape and the sea salt it produces. The salt pans thus link a regional product with the estuary’s cultural landscape.
Buildings and History in Figueira da Foz and Buarcos
Forte de Santa Catarina was an essential part of the defence system for the harbour and bay of Figueira da Foz and Buarcos. In Buarcos, Fortaleza de Buarcos retains significant sections of its original walls and towers; it is often included in sightseeing tours and local cultural events. The corner structure of a medieval fortification with a watchtower survives at Torre de Redondos. It probably belonged to a group of coastal watchtowers intended to protect the anchorage in Buarcos Bay. Fortim de Palheiros, meanwhile, survives as a circular wall with square openings designed to hold artillery.
Casa do Paço was built between 1690 and 1704 by D. João de Melo, Bishop-Count of Coimbra. It is classified as a cultural heritage site worthy of protection. Four rooms on the upper floor contain around 6,700 Dutch tiles in the Delft style. Igreja do Antigo Convento de Santo António features carved wooden altarpieces, Mannerist paintings in the high choir and sculptures dating from the 16th to the 18th century. The church has been classified as a cultural heritage site worthy of protection since 1978.
Museums and Local Traditions
The permanent collections at Museu Municipal Dr. Santos Rocha include religious and contemporary art, numismatics, Indo-Portuguese furniture, ethnography, weapons and archaeology. The museum also includes themed sections on the sea and salt production. NĂşcleo MuseolĂłgico do Mar explores traditional fishing techniques, cod fishing, clothing and customs, natural heritage and local history. It includes a permanent exhibition room, a documentation centre with a library, and an experimental science laboratory. The Querer Saber section focuses on promoting scientific culture and environmental education.
Local cuisine also tells a story of its own: Papas de moado is a traditional dessert from Figueira da Foz. It is a porridge made with flour, blood and sugar.
