Buarcos â Beach, Coast and History
Accommodation in Buarcos
When looking for a hotel in Buarcos, the character of the place is a good starting point. Its defining features include Praia de Buarcos, with its extensive sandy beach, a fortress along the coast and historic buildings in the centre. There is also the maritime heritage of fishing, which is a particular focus of the NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico do Mar. You can therefore consider the beach and landscape, local history and cultural themes as different aspects of this place to stay.
Beach and Coastal Scenery
Praia de Buarcos is an extensive sandy beach. Cabo Mondego, a spur of the Serra da Boa Viagem, reaches the sea and protects the beach from strong northerly winds. The parish of Buarcos brings sea and mountains together in a small area. Coast and mountains are therefore both part of the landscape of this area.
The promenade at Buarcos Beach runs parallel to the ocean and along part of the beach; you can cycle on it. The beach and promenade thus offer different ways to experience the coast: Praia is an extensive stretch of sand, while the promenade provides an opportunity to cycle. If the coast is your main consideration when choosing a place to stay, these features help distinguish the beach landscape from movement along the shore.
Fortifications and Local History
The Fortaleza de SĂŁo Pedro de Buarcos extends along the coast between Praia de Buarcos and Praia da Tamargueira. It was originally built as a fortified line approximately 700 metres long. Together with Fortim de Palheiros and Forte de Santa Catarina, it formed the defensive system of the bay at the mouth of the Mondego. Its approximate length gives an idea of the scale of the historic structure, while its function also places it within the defence of the bay.
The Igreja da MisericĂłrdia de Buarcos, a religious building dating back to the 16th century, stands in the centre of Buarcos. The Pelourinho de Buarcos is also in the centre, on the former Rua Direita. One of its sides is decorated with the old coat of arms of Buarcos. The townâs history is therefore not confined to a single location: the fortress follows the coastline, while the church and Pelourinho stand in the centre.
Fishing and Local Heritage
The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico do Mar was established to preserve and share the memories and practices of fishing associated with the coastal communities of the municipality of Figueira da Foz. It exhibits local written, photographic, audiovisual and oral records. Its cultural focus therefore connects fishing practices with coastal communities and encompasses different forms of heritage.
Since 1 July 2013, the Buarcos branch of the Biblioteca PĂșblica Municipal Pedro Fernandes TomĂĄs has been located on the ground floor of the NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico do Mar. This branch specialises in the subject of the sea. The same building thus brings together memories of fishing and a sea-focused library branch.
