Strehlen combines notable architectural landmarks with a viewpoint, a hiking trail and water-based activities. The Rotunda of St. Gotthard and the St. George’s Hospital Chapel offer distinct historical perspectives; the Town Hall Tower also houses exhibitions. During your stay, you can choose between culture, views, hiking and swimming.

Religious Buildings and the History of the Town

The Rotunda of St. Gotthard in Strehlen (Strzelin) dates from the 12th century and is one of the oldest religious buildings in Silesia. Another point of reference, both in time and architecture, is the Gothic St. George’s Hospital Chapel. It was built in 1351 as part of the former town hospital complex. Since 1993, the chapel has housed Galeria Skalna, which is managed by the cultural institution Strzeliński Ośrodek Kultury.

The Powder Tower also preserves part of the former town fortifications: it is the only tower of them to have survived to this day. Built in the 15th century on a rectangular ground plan, it stands about 15 metres high. The rotunda, chapel and Powder Tower thus represent different architectural forms and historical periods, which you can explore individually when learning about Strehlen’s architectural history.

The Town Hall Tower is more than 70 metres high. It houses a mineral exhibition and a permanent exhibition of photographs of pre-war Strzelin. A Historical Trail is planned to offer another perspective on the past: eight brass figures of historical figures are to be placed on granite stones connected to the town’s history. The plans also include information boards with QR codes, through which residents of the border region will be able to access tourist-educational descriptions and professional audio recordings about the trail’s objects.

Views and Landscape

The old water tower on the slope of Góra Szańcowa is currently used as an observation tower. From there, the view extends across the Strzelińskie Hills, the Ślęża Massif and part of the Silesian Lowlands. This lets you take in the views and landscape from a specific vantage point; the named landmarks range from the regional hills to the lowlands.

The granite quarry in Strehlen on Kamienna Street offers a different view of the landscape. Mining is active there; the quarry is described as the deepest open-pit mine in Europe and the second deepest in the world. Granite mining is therefore as much a part of the local character as the historic buildings. The red hiking trail from Strehlen to Gromnik offers another way to combine your stay with a hike.

Hiking, City Games and Swimming

The Strzelińskie Hills, associated with Strehlen, lie in the wider region. A dense, well-signposted network of cycling and hiking trails runs through this hilly landscape. When planning, you can distinguish between the red hiking trail from Strehlen to Gromnik and the trails in the hills: the first has a named destination, while the regional trail network offers several options for cycling and hiking.

City game themes include a game from Strehlen’s Market Square through a former town gate and a game about a Nobel laureate associated with Strehlen. The themes thus draw on both the town’s history and a notable person connected with the place. For water-based activities, Granit Aquapark has a 25.00 × 12.50 metre swimming pool and a leisure pool with numerous water massage stations.
