Lubański: Towers, Castles and Landscapes
Accommodation in Lubański
Lubański is best explored through its buildings and the landscape along the Kwisa. The Wieża Bracka in Lubań was built in 1318. The tower has eight storeys and is 45 metres high; it houses the mineralogy section of the Regional Museum in Lubań. Its minerals include specimens from the Kwisa Valley as well as the Jizera and Giant Mountains. Medieval architectural history and different landscapes thus come together in one place. If you would like to visit the section, check the current opening hours in advance.
Castles and palaces in historical perspective
Zamek Czocha was built in the 13th century by a Bohemian ruler. At the beginning of the 20th century, Bodo Ebhardt led a renovation that gave the castle some of its fairytale appearance. The medieval foundations and later alterations can be distinguished in the same complex. A guided tour of the courtyards also includes a visit to the castle tower, which offers views of the surrounding area. Access to the tower is only available as part of this tour. The palace in Nawojów Łużycki was built in 1570–1571. Experts consider it one of the most valuable Renaissance architectural monuments in the entire Upper Lusatia region. The palace in Biedrzychowice represents a different period: it is a Baroque palace and one of the most impressive buildings of its kind in western Lower Silesia. Anyone interested in architecture can compare the Renaissance and Baroque periods as distinct historical influences.
Lubań County offers five themed excursion routes. Their themes range from fortifications and aristocratic residences to relics of the former criminal justice system, as well as hydrotechnical and religious monuments. This provides a range of starting points for planning: you can focus on defensive structures, residences, the history of technology or religious buildings.
The Kwisa Valley and engineering structures
Hikes in the Kwisa Valley pass the river, wooded hills and cliffs, as well as a reservoir. The Leśniańska Dam above Leśna adds a striking architectural feature: it is 45 metres high and 130 metres long at the crest. It is considered one of Lower Silesia’s most interesting hydrotechnical monuments. Poland’s oldest hydroelectric power station stands at the foot of the dam. Landscape and the history of technology meet here in close proximity.
In Świeradów-Zdrój, the spa house also brings architecture and water together: its larch-wood promenade hall is 80 metres long. A drinking-water spring containing radon- and iron-rich mineral water is located at the main entrance to the promenade hall. If you would like to use the spring, check in advance whether it is currently operating. The Church of the Sacred Heart in Świecie offers a different kind of art-historical detail. It dates from the 14th century and has a wooden coffered ceiling with portraits of saints.
Activities for different interests
In Lubań, a 2.8-kilometre shared walking and cycling path runs alongside the DK30. It opened in August 2026. Motopark Olszyna is also home to an off-road racing track just under 30 kilometres long, described as the largest in Europe. These offer distinctly different options: a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists on the one hand, and motorsport on the other. Event dates and public access at the Motopark may vary; check the current conditions before planning your visit.
Lower Silesia as a wider destination
In the wider destination of Lower Silesia, the Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica offer another cultural and historical perspective. They are Europe’s largest half-timbered Baroque churches. They were built in the mid-17th century under the terms of the Peace of Westphalia and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. Their half-timbered construction and historical context set them apart from the medieval towers and Renaissance and Baroque palaces.
