Górowski Between Nature Trails and History
Accommodation in Górowski
In northern Lower Silesia, on the border with the Greater Poland and Lubusz Voivodeships, lies Górowski County. Protected landscapes, cycling and hiking trails, churches, palaces and a viewing tower offer a range of ways to spend your stay. When planning, you can focus on observing nature, following a route or visiting historic sites.
Landscape and Routes
The “Dolina Baryczy” Protected Landscape Area includes areas in the municipalities of Niechlów, Jemielno, Góra and Wąsosz. It covers 43,350 hectares. The area is protected because of its diverse ecosystems and its importance for tourism and recreation. This combination of nature and recreation shapes how visitors experience Dolina Baryczy.
The “Jastrząb” cycling and hiking trail starts in Góra and passes through Stara Góra, Rogów Górowski, Osetno, Golę Górowską and Jastrzębie. This sequence of places gives the route a clear course through the county. Along the approximately 48-kilometre “Bóbr” route, you can observe animals and many species of plants and trees. The route is also used for mushroom picking; conditions for this vary. Nature observation and mushroom picking are distinct activities here.
The “DZICZEK” route is suitable for walkers and cyclists and is also used by athletes for Nordic walking. It starts in Góra and ends in Ryczeń. When choosing a route, you can weigh up the different details: “Jastrząb” is described as a cycling and hiking trail, with its course indicated by the places along it; “DZICZEK” names several user groups. The “Bóbr” route is distinguished by its approximate length and opportunities to observe nature.
Historic Sites and Buildings
In Kłoda Górowska stands a well-preserved 17th-century palace with a moat. A fragment of the bridge over the moat, with two surviving coats of arms, remains. Other features include a burial chapel dating from 1892 and tombstones belonging to the von Gossler family. These different historical traces draw attention to more than the palace alone: the bridge, chapel and tombstones are also part of the town’s historic landmarks.
In Góra, the Corpus Christi Church houses a “Holy Steps” chapel, which was a pilgrimage destination in the 18th century. The church’s history probably dates back to the end of the 14th century. The same church therefore brings together a pilgrimage tradition and a long history that can only be dated with some uncertainty.
The ducal castle in Wąsosz lies between the Orla and Barycz rivers. An older commemorative plaque states that it was built in the 14th century and records visits by Piast princes from Głogów, Oleśnica and Legnica. The riverside setting and the historical record offer two distinct points of interest for a visit to the castle.
Following its revitalization, completed in 2017, the Głogowska Tower was used as a viewing point from January 2018; it is also occasionally used as a venue for exhibitions and displays. Check the current opening schedule before your visit.
