Goldberg in Silesia: Gold History and Old Town
Accommodation in Goldberg in Silesia
Discover gold history at real locations in Goldberg in Silesia: the Muzeum Złota is integrated into the fortification walls of Złotoryja. The old town, a church with elements from various architectural styles, and walking paths along the walls add to the historic character. SOWA and themed quests offer more ways to get to know the city.
Gold History and Historic Buildings
The Muzeum Złota is housed in a listed building dating from the second half of the 17th century. The building is integrated into the fortification walls of Złotoryja, linking the museum’s history with the historic structure. The “Górnictwo złota” exhibition explores gold mining and gold extraction in Złotoryja and the surrounding area. On display are mining tools, gold pans, various forms of gold, and gold-like minerals such as fool’s gold. The exhibition offers insights into mining as well as specific objects associated with gold extraction.
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary features Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architectural elements. Inside is a mysterious well. The different stylistic elements give the church its own architectural character and add another aspect of the city’s history to its gold story. According to a city announcement dated April 30, 2026, the tower is scheduled to be open during the 2026 tourist season: Thursday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. These hours apply to the stated season; check the information for your visit date before going.
The old town can also be viewed from more than one perspective: it has restored historic townhouses and a preserved medieval street plan. The houses represent individual buildings, while the street plan reflects the city’s structure. Visitors can also walk along the fortification walls and through plantations established in place of the former moat. Trees there are often more than 100 years old. Along this route, historic urban structures meet today’s greenery.
Discover, Experiment, and Walk
SOWA is a local science center whose concept is based on independent exploration, discovery, and experimentation. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for an individual visit to the Strefa Odkrywania, Wyobraźni i Aktywności. SOWA is open to visitors Tuesday to Saturday, except on public holidays. As opening hours may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.
On the themed quests, visitors solve puzzles, learn about the city’s history, and reach places of interest. Five such quests are listed; this number may change when the program is updated. If you are planning around the number of quests, check the latest information. The quests combine playful activities with local history, while SOWA focuses on independent discovery and experimentation.
The surrounding landscape adds another perspective to walks and sightseeing. Złotoryja is surrounded by the Kaczawskie Foothills, which form part of the Land of Extinct Volcanoes and give the area distinctive geological features. Recurring events include Święto Złota. Święto Złota brings the local community together and promotes its cultural heritage. Together, these offer a range of themes for a stay: historic buildings, gold extraction, science, and the distinctive geology of the surrounding area.
