Legnicki: Monasteries, Routes and Lake Kunickie
Accommodation in Legnicki
The former Benedictine monastery complex in Legnickie Pole was recognised as a Historic Monument of Poland by decree of the President of Poland on 14 April 2004. The present-day monastery complex dates from the 18th century and is considered a major work of Silesian Late Baroque architecture. The former Church of the Holy Trinity in Legnickie Pole now houses a museum. The monastery, church and museum give the destination’s architectural history a clear cultural focus.
Architectural History and Monuments
You can also encounter different historical themes elsewhere. The medieval castle in Prochowice was built around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries by Stefan of Prochowice. It is surrounded by a preserved English landscape park covering 12.33 hectares. While Legnickie Pole is known for its Late Baroque architecture, Prochowice combines a medieval castle with an extensive park.
ChojnĂłw is home to the Piast Castle, which houses the Regional Museum. It was built around 1290 on the left bank of the Skora River. Other cultural monuments include the roadside statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in PÄ…tnĂłwek: the devotional sculpture dates from the early 18th century and was entered in the register of protected monuments of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in 2010. In Jerzmanice, an 18th-century Dutch windmill is one of the particularly valuable structures in Legnicki County. The early medieval fortified settlement site in KrajĂłw, in the municipality of Krotoszyce, has significant tourism and sightseeing value.
Historic Routes and Events
Several routes explore the history of the area. The 20-kilometre Szlak Bitwy nad Kaczawą (Kaczawa Battle Trail) connects Dunino, Krajów, Winnica, Bielowice, Warmątowice Sienkiewiczowskie, Tyńczyk and Janowice Duże. The 12-kilometre Szlak Bitwy 1241 roku (1241 Battle Trail) runs from Legnica railway station via Legnica-Piekary and Bartoszów to Legnickie Pole. Its route from the railway station to Legnickie Pole sets it apart from the 72-kilometre Szlak dookoła Legnicy (Around Legnica Trail), which passes through areas of high natural value and places associated with the events of 1241 and the Battle of the Kaczawa during the Napoleonic Wars.
The 19-kilometre green Szlak nad NysÄ… SzalonÄ… (Nysa Szalona Trail) offers a scenic perspective. It follows the picturesque valley of the Nysa Szalona along the edge of the Janowicki Plateau. The Cistercian Trail runs through Legnicki County and the municipalities of Krotoszyce, Legnica, Legnickie Pole, Kunice and Prochowice. It is associated with the presence of the Cistercians in Lower Silesia.
The Historical Encampment in WarmÄ…towice Sienkiewiczowskie reenacts a battle that took place there during the 1813 Napoleonic campaign. If the encampment is one of the reasons for your trip, check the event dates in advance.
Lake and Protected Landscapes
The 95-hectare Lake Kunickie offers opportunities for water sports, fishing, swimming and walks along the shore. The lake is also notable for its wide variety of waterbirds. At the water sports centres located there, sailing boats, kayaks, motorboats and surfboards have been available to rent. If you plan to hire equipment, check current availability in advance.
Other natural highlights can be found in the protected areas. The Mierzowice Ecological Corridor covers 155.25 hectares of woodland and meadow and is home to 15 protected plant species, including eight strictly protected species. The Natura 2000 Dolina Odry (Odra Valley) site in the municipalities of Prochowice and Ścinawa includes riparian forests with diverse wildlife, such as grey herons, black storks, kestrels, and red and black kites. The destination’s historic buildings and routes thus sit alongside a wide variety of landscapes and natural attractions.
When planning your trip, you can weigh up these options: architectural history and museums, routes with historic connections, or lakeside and nature experiences. The places described are spread across several municipalities, so choose your base according to the themes that matter most for your stay.
