Pątnówek – Castle, Park and Archaeological Traces
Accommodation in Pątnówek
The history of the village spans different periods, from prehistoric settlements to a 19th-century castle. The wider municipality of Miłkowice can also be placed in its regional context: on the Legnica Plain between Legnica and Chojnów.
Castle and Park
At number 38 in Pątnówek stands a castle within a castle, park and manor complex. The castle dates from the 1860s–1870s and was remodelled around the turn of the 20th century. It is listed in the register of historic monuments under number A/3212/720/L; it was entered on 26 June 1986. The building’s history and protected status thus stand alongside the later remodelling as distinct historical milestones.
In the eastern part of the complex is a park dating from the 19th to 20th century. The historical picture of the village also includes a listed Baroque sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk on plot 254/3. The castle, park and sculpture are distinct elements of the local cultural heritage; for visitors interested in history, Pątnówek cannot be reduced to a single period of construction.
Archaeological Traces Through Time
Several sites in Pątnówek point to different periods of settlement and evidence. Site Pątnówek 1/29/76-20 includes a prehistoric settlement and another settlement whose date has not been determined. At Pątnówek 1/27/77-20, settlement traces range from prehistory through the Late La Tène period to the Early Middle Ages and the 13th and 14th centuries.
Site Pątnówek 2/28/77-20 brings together three other chronological and archaeological classifications: a settlement dating from the 14th to 16th century, a skeletal burial ground from the early Migration Period, and a cremation burial ground dating from the Bronze Age to the Hallstatt period. Pątnówek 6/34/76-20 has traces of prehistoric settlement as well as settlements from the Hallstatt period, the Roman Imperial period and the Early Middle Ages.
The sites thus represent different types of archaeological evidence: settlements and settlement traces, as well as burial grounds dated to different periods. The time spans also vary. While some classifications reach back to prehistory, others cover the early Migration Period, the Middle Ages or the centuries up to the 16th century.
The Municipality and Local Traditions
In the wider regional context, the municipality of Miłkowice lies on the Legnica Plain between Legnica and Chojnów. Ten medieval stone penitential crosses survive along the Miłkowice–Legnica route. These details add a municipal and route context to the local evidence without conflating the castle’s history and archaeological sites with the route.
An outdoor recreation area is also part of the village’s more recent history: it was built in 2014 as part of a village development programme. A tradition in Pątnówek, described in 2014, involved weaving a harvest wreath for the annual harvest festivals. The described festival traditions also included potato dishes; cakes were awarded prizes in competitions and sold at a parish fair or harvest festival. This historically situated connection between festival customs and food adds a glimpse of village life at the time to the history of its buildings and settlements.
