Środa Wielkopolska offers several distinct points of interest to consider when planning a trip: a historic center, religious buildings, a cycling route that passes through the town, and a reservoir to the north. This allows you to weigh up whether you are primarily interested in the town’s history, cycling, or the waterside recreation area when choosing your destination.

Historic Town Center and Architectural History

The original street network within the former town fortifications has been preserved in the historic center. Stary Rynek is the surviving market square of the medieval town. Together, the street layout and market square represent two distinct aspects of the town center: its historic network of roads and its former marketplace.

The Collegiate Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Late Gothic brick church, built between 1423 and 1428. During the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, regional assemblies of the Poznań and Kalisz Voivodeships were held in the church. Its construction period and political role link religious architecture with the history of assemblies in the town.

A former Evangelical church in the Neo-Romanesque style stands on Wiosny Ludów Street. It was built between 1881 and 1888, adding a later architectural feature alongside the Late Gothic collegiate church. There is also a monument to General Jan Henryk Dąbrowski, erected in 1997, by the water tower in Środa Wielkopolska. It was designed by Robert Sobociński and is considered the first monument of its kind in Poland.

Reservoir, Cycling Route and Sports

The artificial reservoir north of Środa Wielkopolska was created by damming the Moskawa River between 1968 and 1971. Its geodetic area is 47.7 hectares. The lake serves mainly as a recreation area for the town’s residents. Created in the late 20th century, it is clearly distinct in age from the medieval character of the town center.

There are sand courts for beach volleyball on Plażowa Street. Two are next to a tennis court, and two more are directly beside the beach at Lake Średzkie. If you would like to use the courts, check the current operating arrangements in advance. The Transwielkopolska Cycling Route also passes through Środa Wielkopolska. If you are considering a cycling trip, its route through the town is a specific point of reference when choosing your destination.

Railway History and Nature in the Municipality

The Środa Wielkopolska–Zaniemyśl narrow-gauge railway is a historic line connecting the two towns. The Środa Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum is located in the ŚRODA WIELKOPOLSKA MIASTO station building. If you are planning a museum visit, check opening hours and access in advance.

The municipality also offers opportunities to experience nature: in the southwest of the municipality of Środa Wielkopolska, the Struga Średzka forms the extensive Bagna Średzkie, a protected landscape area. Rare and protected bird species are found there, including herons, mute swans, grebes, black-headed gulls, lapwings and penduline tits. This landscape broadens the focus from the town’s architecture and railway history to protected nature and birdlife.
