For travelers interested in historic village layouts and sacred wooden architecture, Murzynowo Kościelne offers several distinct points of interest. The parish church, a memorial stone to its north, the manor park, and the preserved oval village layout each represent a different aspect of the place. If you are looking for a hotel in Murzynowo Kościelne, these highlights can help you decide which aspects of the village’s history you would like to shape your stay.

The wooden parish church and its grounds

The parish church of St. John the Baptist is an example of rural Baroque wooden sacred architecture in Greater Poland. Its history includes a rebuilding after a fire: an earlier wooden church burned down in 1739; the present wooden church was built between 1739 and 1742. These were two successive churches, not two construction phases of the same building. The church grounds also include a wooden bell tower with an open post-and-beam structure dating from the late 18th century, as well as a roofed, masonry chapel. The materials and construction methods distinguish these two other features of the grounds: the bell tower is open and made of wood, while the chapel is masonry and roofed.

Memorial stone and manor park

North of the parish church, a memorial stone with a metal plaque stands in a triangular square. It was erected in 1986 in memory of the Greater Poland insurgents from Murzynowo and the surrounding area. Its location and commemorative purpose provide a distinct point of interest alongside the church’s architectural history.

The 19th-century manor park is protected under the register and inventory of historic monuments. It is another historic feature of the village, offering a distinct perspective on local history alongside the sacred buildings and the memorial stone.

Village layout and building ensembles

Murzynowo Kościelne’s historic oval village layout has been preserved and remains discernible today. It broadens the view beyond individual buildings to a different scale: the shape of the village is also part of the inherited landscape. The oval village layout describes the settlement as a whole, while three separate building ensembles identify particular groups of buildings.

These ensembles reveal the settlement’s historic ownership structure. They include a manor farm with a park and the Ozdowski family manor house. A sacred ensemble is centered on the church dating from the mid-18th century, which was expanded with a Neo-Gothic section in 1900. The third ensemble comprises rural residential and farm buildings. The groups thus represent different areas of the settlement: the manor estate, sacred buildings, and rural living and working. The inherited village layout and the separate building groups can therefore be viewed as two different aspects of the village’s structure.

Cycling and a historic route to the south

For cyclists, there is a reference that can be placed in context: a description published in 2015 portrays Murzynowo Kościelne as a frequently used route for cyclists heading toward Miłosław or Winna Góra. For your current ride, check the route and conditions in advance.

A local road heading south is a separate matter. It was once the main route connecting the village with the seat of the owner of the Winna Góra estate, but today it is only of marginal importance. The cycling route in the two directions mentioned and the former function of this southern road therefore differ both in orientation and in time frame.
