Chłapowo brings together 19th-century architectural history and archaeological traces from earlier periods. For travelers who take these themes into account when choosing a destination, the palace, its landscaped park and the castle site are prominent points of reference. There is also an archaeological settlement and a Bronze Age cremation cemetery. The timeline thus spans the Bronze Age, the fortified manor house of the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period, and the palace and park of the 19th century.

Palace and Park in the 19th Century

Chłapowo Palace dates from 1865–1866 and is a brick building in the Classical style. It is protected under both the monuments register and the monuments inventory. The palace park is classified as a landscaped park and is also protected in both records; it dates from the second half of the 19th century. The two dates set different time frames: specific construction years are given for the palace, while the park is assigned to a broader period. Thus, although the building and the history of the park both belong to the same century, they can be dated with different levels of precision. The architecture and landscaped park represent two distinct aspects of the area’s history.

The Castle Site: Location and Historical Background

An older point of reference is Chłapowo’s conical castle site. It preserves the remains of a fortified manor house from the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period. The site lies on the edge of a hill, at the boundary with the meadows in the Moskawa Valley. It is on the left bank of the Moskawa, 150 m east of its riverbed. The hillside, valley meadows and riverbank give the historic site a clearly defined setting. The site is very well preserved and at the same time heavily overgrown. Its vegetation may change as a result of vegetation management.

Dimensions and Fortifications

The castle site is a 7 m-high truncated cone. Its diameter is 75 m at the base and 18 m across the upper surface. It therefore becomes significantly narrower toward the top without ending in a point. A 5 m-wide ditch and an 8 m-wide rampart, up to 3.5 m high, surround the site. Together with the conical shape, the ditch and rampart illustrate the fortified character of the historic manor house. The measurements help convey the site’s profile: a broad base, a much smaller upper surface and the surrounding fortifications together form its distinctive shape.

Other Archaeological Traces of the Past

The Chłapowo archaeological settlement, site 4, is also protected under both the monuments register and the monuments inventory. The Chłapowo cremation cemetery, site 2, dates from the Bronze Age. The names refer to different types of archaeological sites: a settlement and a cemetery. The cremation cemetery takes us far back before the Middle Ages; the fortified manor house and the palace belong to later periods. Chłapowo thus brings together different traces of its history, although they do not belong to the same period.

Planning Your Trip

If you are looking for hotels in Chłapowo, the different periods can help shape the focus of your stay. The palace and landscaped park represent 19th-century history; the castle site combines an older manor house with a distinctive landform. The Bronze Age cremation cemetery offers another point of reference in time. Chłapowo is also located on the A2 motorway, another geographical factor to consider when choosing a destination. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus more on architecture and the history of the park or on older archaeological traces.
