Birnbaum, in Powiat Międzychodzki, can be explored through several distinct interests: the ice-age-shaped hills of the Międzychód-Sieraków Lake District, historic buildings, museums, and activities on the water or on foot. More than 100 lakes shape the district’s landscape. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether you’d most like to explore trails and nature, water sports, or cultural sites.

Lakes, water and trails

The Sierakowski Landscape Park offers opportunities for active recreation, including motorized water sports, kayaking, sailing, cycling, horse riding and cross-country skiing. The park has a dense network of hiking, horse-riding, cycling and water trails, with an estimated total length of around 1,000 kilometers. This is an approximate total for the network, not the length of any single route.

Two cycling routes pass through different sequences of named places. In Powiat Międzychodzki, the international R-1 cycling route runs through Lewice, Łowyń, Gorzyń, Wielowieś, Międzychód, Mierzyn and Sowią Góra. The Szlak Stu Jezior R-8 connects Międzychód, Olandia in Prusim, Chalin, Sieraków, Chrzypsko Wielkie, Łężeczki and Białokosz. The International Way of St. James also has a 38-kilometer route through the district, passing through Bucharzewo, Sieraków, Chalin and Międzychód.

The entire length of the Warta River within the district is accessible to watercraft. There are water-tourism stations in Międzychód and Sieraków. If you’re interested in a specific water sport, you’ll also find WakePark Sieraków on Lake Jaroszewskie, with a two-pylon cable lift.

History and architecture

The Muzeum Zamek Opalińskich in Sieraków displays the sarcophagi of the Opaliński family and archaeological finds from excavations. These include stove tiles, vessels, glass and personal items. Churches and palaces offer another perspective on local history: the parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kamionna was built in 1499. It preserves late Gothic choir stalls, a late Gothic crucifix and a 16th-century bell.

The parish Church of St. Adalbert in Chrzypsko Wielkie was built between 1600 and 1609 as a late Gothic brick structure. The palace in Kwilcz was built in 1828 to a design by architect Karol Fryderyk Schinkel. It stands in an expansive park and is a plastered, solid-walled building in the late Classicist style. In Sieraków, Stado Ogierów offers a different focus: the center is dedicated to equestrian recreation and sport, and breeds Wielkopolska horses and Polish Konik horses.

Experience nature and get hands-on

In Chalin, the Ośrodek Edukacji Przyrodniczej is housed in a restored 19th-century manor house, within a historic farm complex surrounded by a park. The center has six Nordic walking routes with a combined length of 50 kilometers. It offers one-day classes and nature excursions for school groups.

A shorter, more focused trail is the Ostępy Puszczy Noteckiej educational trail in Bucharzewo: it is three kilometers long, has ten stops and covers nature conservation and forestry. Bucharzewo is also home to the Integracyjny Leśny Ogród Edukacyjny Leśna Przygoda. The two-hectare site is adapted for people with disabilities, including wheelchair users and people who are blind or visually impaired.

At the Centrum Edukacji Regionalnej i Przyrodniczej in Mniszki, visitors can try making clay vessels and a willow basket in workshops. Alongside routes and historic buildings, the program therefore includes hands-on insights into traditional activities.

The route details help distinguish between the different offerings: three kilometers refers to the educational trail in Bucharzewo, 50 kilometers to the combined length of the six Nordic walking routes in Chalin, and 38 kilometers to the Way of St. James route through the district. When planning a hotel stay, you can weigh these different focuses against the cultural sites and water activities.
