Accommodation in Łowyń
Łowyń is located on Lake Łowyńskie, in a depression in the moraine upland. The landscape, memorial sites and historical traces provide concrete points of reference when choosing a destination. Two route itineraries also include the town as part of longer journeys.
Landscape and Location
Lake Łowyńskie is a concrete point of reference for the location; the depression describes the terrain within the moraine upland. The term “moraine upland” classifies the landform, while the depression identifies Łowyń’s position within it. The lake and the landform therefore provide two distinct points of reference for situating the town in its landscape.
Church and Memorial Sites
The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Łowyń was built in 1927. A commemorative plaque is linked to this year: a black stone plaque was unveiled in the parish church vestibule on August 15, 2002, the 75th anniversary of the church’s construction. It commemorates participants in the Greater Poland Uprising, soldiers who fought for freedom and independence, and three local priests who were tortured to death in the Nazi camp at Dachau. The year the church was built and the unveiling date mark two different points in time.
Another memorial site is the grave of Łukasz Kulik in the parish cemetery. Kulik was from Pakosław and held the rank of lance corporal. In January 1919, he was wounded during the uprising operations and murdered by Germans at the local railway station. The concrete monument from 1924 was replaced by a stone plaque and a black granite gravestone. The gravestone depicts a crowned eagle, a crossed rifle and sabre; the memorial was consecrated on January 17, 1996. Unlike the plaque, which commemorates several groups and priests, this grave connects one individual with the design of a specific memorial site.
The Mill and Its History
A mill was built in Łowyń before 1912 and operated until 1939. It was probably a post mill dating from the 18th or 19th century. The mill’s classification as this type of structure is therefore uncertain, while its period of operation is given as lasting until 1939. Thus, the church’s construction is assigned a definite year, whereas the mill’s architectural type is described cautiously.
Routes Through and Across Łowyń
For cyclists, the International Cycle Route R-1 is a specific point of reference: it passes through Łowyń between Lewice and Gorzyń and meets National Road 24 at Gorzyń. Another route itinerary is listed under “Szlaki turystyczne”: it starts in Stare Osieczno and passes through Sowia Góra, Międzychód, Zatom Stary, Ławica, Chalin, Prusim, Kamionna, the “Dolina Kamionki” nature reserve, Mnichy and Łowyń. It then continues via Nowe Gorzycko to Wierzbno. Łowyń is listed at 51.1 km, and Wierzbno at 68.6 km. Route R-1 places Łowyń between two named locations; the longer itinerary positions the town as a stop on a route from Stare Osieczno to Wierzbno. If you plan to take either route, check its current course and condition in advance.
