Townscape and routes

Międzychód lies on an isthmus between a lake and a river. From the market square, the narrow lanes known as “gaskami” lead either to the lake or to the Warta. The town also has a promenade that runs around Jezioro Miejskie. The remarkable urban layout of the Old Town is another distinctive aspect of the townscape. The lanes provide orientation between the market square and the bodies of water; the Old Town layout draws attention to the urban space as a whole. The routes and the town’s form thus offer different perspectives on Międzychód.

Spring and town history

The “Laufpompa” is an artesian spring enclosed in a decorative cast-iron pump. Its water rises from a depth of about 90 metres. The spring has a distinctive smell and is attributed with healing properties. The Laufpompa thus combines a notable feature of the spring with striking design. For visitors interested in distinctive features of the town, it is a destination in its own right, alongside the lanes and historic buildings.

At the Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Kościół pw. Niepokalanego Serca Najśw. Marii Panny), historic tomb slabs commemorating townspeople from the 17th and 18th centuries are set into the boundary wall. The vestibule also contains the tomb slab of Krzysztof Unruh, who owned the town in the 17th century. These details offer different historical perspectives: the slabs in the wall commemorate townspeople from two centuries, while the vestibule slab honours a named individual. The Regional Museum is located at ul. 17 Stycznia 100. The Old Town’s urban layout provides a broader context; the tomb slabs and the museum are further specific points of interest for exploring the town’s cultural history.

Cultural sites and special details

Tietza Park by the lake is adorned with a wooden sculpture and a stone featuring a portrait based on a surviving photograph. Two distinct forms of visual art stand side by side here: a wooden sculpture and a portrait based on a photograph that has been preserved. The park adds another cultural perspective to the historic tomb slabs and the Old Town layout.

Routes in and around Międzychód

The tourist route “Szlakiem sławnych międzychodzian” (In the Footsteps of Famous Międzychód Residents) passes through Międzychód. Another tourist trail starts at the bridge in Międzychód and connects the town with Skwierzyna on the north bank of the Warta. The routes can be distinguished by their course: one runs through the town, while the other connects Międzychód with Skwierzyna along the river. The “Szlakiem sławnych międzychodzian” route has a thematic connection to the town, while the trail to Skwierzyna has a different destination.

The nearby forest reserve

A short distance east of Międzychód lies the “Kolno Międzychodzkie” forest reserve. Established in 1959, it covers 14.77 hectares and is located between Lakes Koleńskie and Kludno, in the municipality of Międzychód. A red hiking trail from Międzychód to Kamionna passes through the nearby reserve. This trail runs through the protected area and connects the two named places. It therefore differs both from the tourist route through the town and from the trail along the north bank of the Warta towards Skwierzyna.
