Discover Krotoszyn: Culture, Routes and Nature
Accommodation in Krotoszyn
Krotoszyn brings together a range of travel interests and specific destinations: architectural history, a regional museum, urban green spaces, and swimming pools. There are also walking and cycling routes, as well as nature and cultural attractions in the wider Krotoszyn County. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between local and regional destinations and group them according to the interests that matter for your stay.
Walking, Cycling and Nature
The red “Krotoszyn–Baszków” walking trail connects the two towns over 15.3 kilometers. Two other distances are listed for cycling routes: the black “Wokół Krotoszyna” cycle route is 44.1 kilometers long, and the green “Krotoszyńskie Dąbrowy” cycle route is 39.3 kilometers long. The difference between the two cycling routes is 4.8 kilometers. This makes it possible to compare walking and cycling routes by their stated lengths without treating the different types of routes as equivalent.
The wider Krotoszyn County also has the 4.3-kilometer “Ekologiczna ścieżka przyrodnicza” nature trail, with six educational stations. It passes through the “Mszar Bogdaniec” peat bog nature reserve, which protects peat bogs and part of a forest with swamp and bog vegetation, as well as the “Baszków” floristic nature reserve, where a population of royal fern is protected. This route combines nature observation with information about protected habitats. The “Dąbrowy Krotoszyńskie Baszków–Rochy” protected landscape area is also protected under Natura 2000; part of the area lies in Krotoszyn County.
The “Miejski Bór” floristic nature reserve lies within Krotoszyn itself. Two plant species are protected there: European honeysuckle and ivy. In the town, “Wojska Polskiego” Landscape Park dates from the first half of the 19th century. Its design includes two ponds with fountains. The urban park and the regional nature reserves therefore differ both in their settings and in the natural features described.
Museum and Architectural History
The Hieronim Ławniczak Regional Museum displays more than 1,300 museum objects in its permanent exhibition. Its subjects range from archaeology to local folk culture and regional art. Temporary exhibitions are also added several times a year, covering historical, artistic, natural history, and regional topics. The museum is housed in the adjacent Baroque monastery building; a former Trinitarian church is now the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.
The houses and public buildings also tell different chapters of the area’s architectural history. Krotoszanka is the oldest surviving house in Krotoszyn: a wooden arcaded house dating from the second half of the 18th century. The town hall was built around 1689, replacing an earlier wooden building. The two structures can be distinguished by their dates: the town hall was built about a century before the house now considered the oldest surviving one. Krotoszyn County also has a wooden town hall dating from 1743, described as the only one of its kind in Greater Poland and Europe.
Swimming and Regional Cuisine
For a visit to the “WODNIK” Sports and Leisure Center, the distinction between indoor and outdoor swimming is clear: the indoor pool has two pools and an indoor slide that is more than 50 meters long. The outdoor pool complex includes a 50 × 25-meter swimming pool, a children’s pool, and a splash pool for toddlers. If swimming is one of your travel interests, these pool types and sizes provide a factual basis for comparing the two facilities.
Another regional highlight is the cuisine: Krotoszyn County is the main organizer of the annual culinary festival “Powiat od kuchni,” where local specialties are served. Together with the museum, architectural history, and the various routes, the festival offers a distinct way to explore the wider travel area.
