Discover Schildberg: Churches, museums and cycling routes
Accommodation in Schildberg
Explore Schildberg through a variety of interests: the parish church in Ostrzeszów combines a long architectural history with frescoes, altars and works of art. Two museums focus on different aspects of history; swimming and cycling offer opportunities to get active. You can plan your stay around culture, water and excursions.
Church history and sacred art
The parish church in Ostrzeszów was founded in 1353, and its nave was added in 1360. Following earlier destruction, it was rebuilt between 1721 and 1723. Inside, you will find frescoes donated by the citizens of Ostrzeszów between the 14th and 19th centuries, as well as Baroque altars and a copy of Murillo’s “The Assumption of the Virgin.” The chancel arch features limewood figures believed to have been carved by Albrecht Dürer. The church’s date and the frescoes donated over several centuries give its sacred furnishings a distinctive historical context.
Museums and their themes
A museum about the presence of the Bernardines and the history of the Sisters of Nazareth is located in the church and monastery complex of the Sisters of Nazareth. There is also a temporary exhibition about the Sisters of Nazareth in Grodno; former burial crypts are open to visitors as well. Visits are possible on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:00, 2:00 or 3:00 p.m., and on Sundays at 2:00 or 3:00 p.m. Plan your visit around these time slots and check visiting hours in advance.
The Władysław Golus Regional Museum is located in Ostrzeszów Town Hall at Rynek 19. Its permanent exhibitions focus on Norwegian officers at Oflag XXI C, the work of Antoni Serbeński, and “Ignacy Moś for His City.” These topics of wartime captivity, art and local history complement the religious and monastic history covered by the other museum.
Swimming indoors and outdoors
The supervised Kąpielisko bathing area in Ostrzeszów has a sandy beach, a 60 × 110-metre pool, a diving platform and a 50-metre water slide. During the seasonal operating period, WOPR lifeguards supervise the bathing area. Seasonal opening times may vary, so check whether the facility is open before visiting.
The Oceanik indoor swimming pool is located at the KąpieLOVA Sports and Recreation Centre. It has a stainless-steel leisure pool with air and water attractions, as well as a children’s pool. Check current opening times before your visit here, too. The two swimming facilities can be compared by their different features and operating conditions.
Cycling routes by length and character
The Amber Cycling Route begins in Syców and continues via the Ostrzeszów Hills, Kobyla Góra and Ostrzeszów to Przewóz. It runs mostly along paved roads with little traffic; some sections follow unpaved roads, field tracks or forest trails. There are no major technical difficulties, and the route is suitable regardless of bicycle type or fitness level. Surface conditions may change, so it is worth checking the latest conditions before setting out.
The black-marked “W Dolinę Baryczy” connecting route is 11 km long and runs from Ostrzeszów via Rojów to Szklarka Myślniewska. It is suitable for beginners. A longer loop is the red-marked “Szlak Przyrodniczy” nature trail: it starts at OSiR in Ostrzeszów, passes through the Jodły Ostrzeszowskie nature reserve, Pieczyska, Godziętowy, Tokarzew and Królewskie, then returns to OSiR. It is 21 km long. This gives you the choice between an 11 km route described as suitable for beginners and a 21 km loop with a set itinerary. Markings and trail conditions may change, so check them before your ride.
Ostrzeszów railway station is located at Dworcowa 6, 63-500 Ostrzeszów. Check operational information before travelling.
