Discover Smolice: Palace, Park and Church
Accommodation in Smolice
For a trip to Smolice, there are several specific themes to choose from: the Neo-Baroque palace with its extensive park, and the church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A cycle route also connects the village with Raszewy and Pasierby. When planning a hotel stay, you can consider the history of the buildings and park alongside the cycle route as separate interests.
Palace and English landscape park
The Neo-Baroque palace is surrounded by an extensive park. It was remodelled in the Neo-Baroque style after 1910, while the park dates from the 19th century. It has survived to this day as an English landscape park and covers 18.15 hectares. The same site thus brings together two distinct design styles: the Neo-Baroque palace and the English-style landscape park.
The park features a fountain, water channels and three ponds. These specific water features add distinct elements to the park’s landscape design: a fountain, channels and ponds. The palace also includes a palm house with exotic plants. Thus, in addition to the extensive park, the estate has a dedicated feature for housing plants.
Church and architectural history
In the southeast of Smolice, the church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands at the northern corner of the palace park. Its main entrance is on the west side, in a 46-metre-high tower. The entrance features an elaborately designed columned portal, with a figure of Christ at the top. The tower’s height and the portal’s design offer two distinct points of reference for the architecture of the entrance.
The plastered church was built at the beginning of the 20th century by Countess von Ziethen, to plans by the Wrocław architects Gaze and Bottcher. It is Neo-Baroque and built of masonry, with three naves laid out in the shape of a Latin cross. The transept is weakly defined, and the apse has a semicircular end. The three naves describe the division of the church interior; the cross shape, transept and apse specify its ground plan. Thus, details of the entrance and the layout of the entire building can be considered together.
Cycle route and trip planning
The cycle route connects Smolice with Raszewy and Pasierby. This adds another point of reference for trip planning alongside the architecture and park design: a connection between three places. If cycling is important to you, you can consider this route as a distinct focus alongside the buildings and park, without conflating it with the individual sights.
Would you like to plan your trip mainly around the history of the buildings and park, or include the cycle route to Raszewy and Pasierby? This choice directs your attention to different aspects of the area and gives your search for a hotel in Smolice a specific starting point.
