Śmigiel offers travelers a range of points of interest if they are considering historic buildings, the history of technology and cycling activities when choosing a destination. Key themes include the post mills Serwacy and Pankracy, the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a historic gasworks complex, and the Śmigielska Kolej Dojazdowa. A 26-kilometer cycling route adds an active option to the selection. The range therefore extends from sacred architecture and technical heritage to a specific cycling route. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding on your main interests; for the mills, you should also note the conditions for visiting the interiors.

The mills and visiting conditions

The historic post mills Serwacy and Pankracy stand on a hill at the entrance to Śmigiel from the direction of Poznań. Śmigiel also holds a special place on the Wielkopolska Windmill Trail. This brings together two specific points of interest related to windmills: the two named structures and the town’s role on the trail. Interested groups can visit the interiors of the windmills on weekdays by making arrangements in advance with a member of staff at Śmigiel Town Hall. Arrange such a visit before you arrive if you plan to go inside.

Church and gasworks: architecture and the history of technology

The parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a Gothic main structure and a Neo-Gothic tower. The two style terms refer to different parts of the building: the main structure is Gothic, while the tower is Neo-Gothic. The church also contains an early Baroque tomb monument to Urszula Brzeźnicka, dating from 1627. The main structure and tower provide two architectural points of interest; the tomb monument adds a dated art-historical detail.

The municipal gasworks complex in Śmigiel was built in 1902 by the Bremen-based company Carl Francke. It is a unique technical site associated with the rich traditions of gasworks in Greater Poland, and also the only fully preserved gasworks operation in the voivodeship and the region. The year and builder’s name provide a specific historical context for the complex; its complete preservation sets it apart as an example of technical heritage. The history of gasworks thus complements the architectural themes of the church and windmills.

Railway, buildings and cycling route

The Śmigielska Kolej Dojazdowa runs through Śmigiel and has preserved almost all of its historic infrastructure. This includes stations, locomotive-shed equipment, tracks, and vehicles such as locomotives, carriages, rail trolleys, coal wagons and forest railway wagons. The preservation therefore covers both fixed railway features and various types of vehicles. The old brewery building is also among Śmigiel’s notable buildings; another attraction is a 49-meter-high water tower.

If you would like to include cycling in your trip plans, the Śmigielska Pętla Wschodnia is a specific option: the cycling route is 26 km long. Its length provides a clear point of comparison with the town’s buildings and technical heritage. This lets you choose between focusing on history and architecture or taking a bike ride when planning your trip.
