The parish church of St. Barbara, the manor park and the ruins of St. Martin’s Church provide Gryżyna with specific historical points of reference. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Gryżyna, the architectural history and named routes can help shape your travel plans around your interests. The churches should not be confused with one another: St. Barbara’s stands in Gryżyna, while the ruins lie nearby, southwest of the built-up area.

St. Barbara’s: a 19th-century Neo-Gothic building

The parish church of St. Barbara in Gryżyna was built in 1888 in the Neo-Gothic style, based on a design by Alexis Langer of Wrocław. The church has a 45 m-high brick tower. The year of construction, architectural style and designer describe different aspects of the building: its historical period, architectural design and the author of the plans.

If you are interested in architectural history, St. Barbara’s offers a clearly dated point of reference. Compared with the ruins of St. Martin’s Church nearby, it dates from a much later period: the parish church was built in 1888, while the ruins date back to the late 13th century.

Manor park and preserved ice house

The manor park was laid out in the landscape style in the late 18th century and covers about 1 ha. Its approximate area gives an indication of the size of the grounds, while the landscape style describes their design. This site therefore draws attention both to its extent and to its historical layout.

An original ice house has been preserved in the manor park. It was built in the second half of the 19th century and fitted with new thatched roofing in 2017. The date when the ice house was built and the later roofing work should be clearly distinguished: the ice house dates from the 19th century, while its new thatched roof was added in 2017. The park itself also offers an earlier historical reference, having been laid out in the late 18th century.

The ruins of St. Martin’s Church nearby

The ruins of St. Martin’s Church lie about 1.5 km southwest of Gryżyna’s built-up area. The direction and reference to the built-up area help distinguish this site from the buildings in Gryżyna. The church was built in the late 13th century and has survived to the present as a permanent ruin.

Partially preserved perimeter walls reach up to 7 m in height. Together with the construction date, the ruins can thus be understood both in their historical context and through their surviving walls. They belong to a much earlier period than the parish church of St. Barbara, built in 1888; the two churches therefore represent different periods in the area’s architectural history.

Route details for travel planning

The green hiking trail from the Krzan forester’s lodge to Miranowo is 71 km long. Gryżyna is marked along it at kilometre 24.5. This kilometre marker indicates the position on the full hiking trail, not the length of a route starting from Gryżyna.

Another named route is Gryżyna–Nowy Dębiec, listed as 3.79 km long. The figures refer to different routes: 71 km is the total length of the green hiking trail between the Krzan forester’s lodge and Miranowo, while 3.79 km is the length of the Gryżyna–Nowy Dębiec route. For planning purposes, these figures should therefore be read as measurements of separate routes, not as two descriptions of the same trail.

As route conditions can change, check the conditions on the relevant route before setting out on a planned trip.
