The IJzeren Man tells the story of how a landscape was formed and the Eindhoven–Weert railway line was built: the artificial lake was created in 1912 through sand extraction; the sand was needed for the railway line. Around the lake, winding waterways, forests, fen areas and walking trails shape the landscape. Nature and history come together here in a tangible way.

Landscape and activities in KempenBroek

The cross-border KempenBroek area extends across the municipality of Weert. Its landscape includes marshes, stream valleys, heathland and farmland. On 5 July 2024, UNESCO recognised KempenBroek as the first cross-border UNESCO Man and Biosphere area in the Benelux countries.

In KempenBroek, you can go hiking, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding and carriage driving. The options range from hiking and cycling to mountain biking or activities with horses and carriages. The municipality of Weert also has designated bridleways and carriage routes.

Archaeological heritage of the Boshoverheide

The Boshoverheide urnfield is considered the largest urnfield in north-western Europe and comprises more than 3,100 burial mounds. The site is protected and managed as a Rijksmonument (national heritage site) and as a Natura 2000 area under the Habitats and Birds Directives. Alongside its landscapes of marshes, forests and heathland, this site reveals another side of the region: significant archaeological heritage, shaped in part by its protected status.

Mills and regional products

De Hoop Mill is located in Swartbroek. Its wooden octagonal structure and gallery form a combination unique in Limburg. The mill grinds wheat, rye and buckwheat into flour for consumption and regularly operates as a working mill. If you’re planning a visit to see it milling, check that it is operating before you travel.

At Sint Annamolen Keent, the focus is different: a small mill shop selling various types of artisan flour, honey, jam, syrup and linseed oil. If you’re visiting for a particular product, check what is currently available before your visit.

Museum and performing arts programme in Weert

In the heart of Weert, Museum W is a cultural history museum housed in a restored historic building: the former town hall. Its present use as a museum brings the building’s history as a town hall into dialogue with the present.

The Munttheater’s 2026/27 season features cabaret, music, family performances, shows, theatre lectures and classical performances. The programme also includes performances by professional ensembles and well-known artists, as well as emerging talent and regional productions from Weert and the surrounding area. If you’re planning to attend a performance during your trip, check the dates for your travel period.

A place to visit with children

At Kinderboerderij De IJzeren Man, children can walk among the animals and pet them. The petting farm is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet. There is one restriction on getting there: it can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. If a visit is part of your plans in Weert, take this into account when planning your trip.
