Mook en Middelaar lies between the Meuse and the Mookerheide. Woodland and heath, a glacial push-moraine landscape, and cultural and historical landmarks give the municipality its varied character. When planning a trip, you can focus on nature, Roman history, cycling tours, or time by the water—depending on the experiences that matter to you during your stay.

Hills, Heath, and Trails at Sint-Jansberg

East of Mook lies the Mookerheide, a woodland and heathland area in the Dutch province of Limburg. Elevation changes shape the landscape, with views over the Meuse from there. Sint-Jansberg also brings together several types of scenery: a wooded slope, a watermill, a wetland, and fields. In the nature reserve, winding paths cross the hills and run along the meadows. Higher vantage points offer views.

One specific hiking trail is “Rond Jachtslot de Mookerheide.” It passes a lookout tower with panoramic views over the surrounding landscape. When planning, you can choose between paths over hills and along meadows, or the route with its lookout tower and panoramic views.

Hunting Lodge, Mill, and Roman Traces

Jachtslot Mookerheide is a hunting lodge built in 1904 in the Art Nouveau style. Guided tours are available for individuals and groups; check the booking arrangements in advance. The lodge serves coffee, lunch, drinks, and dinner daily. As this current offering may change, it is advisable to check the visitor information before your visit.

Another testament to the region’s history is the Bovenste Plasmolen. The mill dates from 1725 and was initially used to make paper for more than 100 years. In 1846, it was converted to grind and husk grain. The Bovenste Plasmolen is a double-entry watermill: its waterwheel can be powered by water from both below and above.

The remains of a Roman villa can also be found at Sint-Jansberg. It is described as the largest civilian building from Roman times found in the Netherlands; the main building measured approximately 84 Ă— 22 metres. Since 1978, the site has been a legally protected archaeological monument. A pipe structure makes its history visible above ground. These are distinct from the remains of a Roman bridge: in the fourth century AD, the Romans built a bridge over the Meuse near Cuijk and Middelaar. Its remains are among those of only two Roman bridges found in the Netherlands. An information board with an artwork about the bridge stands by the Meuse at Middelaar.

The programme for Open Monumentendag 2026 lists a cycling route of approximately 20 kilometres, with options to shorten it. It passes the municipality’s municipal, provincial, and national monuments. Some monuments are open to visitors, while others have information boards. Check the dates and programme for the relevant year when planning your trip.

Mookerplas: Water and Recreation

At Mookerplas near Plasmolen, you can go boating, fishing, and hiking. The recreation area includes a sandy beach, a sunbathing lawn, play equipment, and several food and drink options. It also has wheelchair-accessible entrance gates and parking spaces for people with a disabled parking permit. As individual facilities or offerings may change, check the latest visitor information before you travel.

Mookerplas is also popularly known as “De Siep” and is in open connection with the Meuse; boats can also be launched there. At TIP Plasmolen, there is an information board with an overview map, and route maps for hikers and cyclists are sold there. This guidance complements the various activities by the water with ideas for routes on foot and by bike.

Cycling Tours and Regional Routes

The “Mooks ommetje” is a 23.5-kilometre cycling route that starts and ends at Herberg Restaurant 't Zwaantje in Mook. It runs through forests and open fields and along the Meuse, passing atmospheric villages and historic sites. If you would like to consider a longer regional route instead of a set circuit, the Via Romana long-distance cycle route connects the varied landscape between Nijmegen and Xanten, passing numerous Roman attractions.

For mountain bikers, the Mook route runs through the Mookse and Groesbeekse forests. It is marked with blue arrows and has a moderate technical difficulty level. The Liberation Route Europe offers a different kind of historical orientation: it passes several sites of importance to the Second World War in the municipalities of Heumen, Cuijk, Grave, and Mook en Middelaar, and includes a ferry crossing from Cuijk to Middelaar. For specific plans for this crossing, it is worth checking the ferry timetable.

Choose a Hotel That Suits Your Plans

Compare the location of a hotel you are considering with the places you want to visit. This lets you base your choice on your own plans for each day, rather than treating different excursions as one and the same itinerary.
