Molenhoek offers different reasons to visit: Molenhoekdag, hikes and architectural sights. If you are looking for a hotel, consider whether you want to plan your stay mainly around the event dates or around time for nature and culture.

Molenhoekdag as a reason to visit

Molenhoekdag takes place every year over two days in the centre of Molenhoek and attracts thousands of visitors each year. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the exact event dates before making plans and arrange your hotel stay accordingly. Its two-day duration gives the event a clearly defined timeframe; you can separately consider whether to add other interests to your plans.

Hikes and starting points

The hiking trails differ in their connections to the train station. The “Twee Schansen langs Landgoed Mookerheide” route starts at the car park of Landgoed Mookerheide at Heumensebaan 2. A walk of a few minutes leads from Mook-Molenhoek NS railway station to the route. The “Rond Jachtslot de Mookerheide” hiking route starts and ends at Mook/Molenhoek NS railway station and passes an observation tower with panoramic views over the surrounding landscape. This difference is useful when planning: for the first route, a short walk leads from the station to the route; the second starts and ends at the station. You can compare the routes based on their different connections to the station.

Forest, nature reserve and views

Landgoed Mookerheide borders the Mookerheide nature reserve. Yellow arrows from Jachtslot Mookerheide lead through extensive forests to beautiful views over the Maasdal. On the “Twee Schansen langs Landgoed Mookerheide” route, you may encounter Scottish Highland cattle. The trails therefore offer different nature experiences: the transition between the estate and the nature reserve, marked paths through the forest, and the possibility of encountering animals. When choosing, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in landscape views, forest paths or wildlife watching.

Architecture at O.L. Vrouw van Zeven Smarten

The O.L. Vrouw van Zeven Smarten church is a three-aisled cruciform basilica with a flat-ended choir and an entrance portal; a tower with a tent roof stands beside it. “Three-aisled” describes a layout divided into three aisles. The flat-ended choir and cruciform basilica are further features of its architectural form. Inside are four chapels dedicated to H. Paulus van het Kruis, H. Gemma, H. Gabriël and Maria Dolorosa. Jac Maris designed the altars for all four chapels; they feature majolica depictions. The overall layout, individual structural elements and the design of the chapels can thus be considered as different aspects of the church’s architecture.

Dining at Jachtslot

Visitors to Jachtslot Mookerheide are welcomed with coffee or tea, lunch, drinks, afternoon tea and a gourmet dinner. Services may change. If you are planning a particular meal or dinner, check the current offering before your visit.
