Discover Echt-Susteren on hiking trails, through its architectural history and with a taste of regional cuisine. The long-distance Pieterpad trail passes through the municipality and attracts many hikers every year. The A73 and A2 motorways also provide access to the municipality and help you plan your journey by car.

Hiking through town centers and the surrounding countryside

The local Ommetjes trails are between 4 and 8 kilometers long and lead through both town centers and the surrounding countryside. For longer walks, the Knopen Lopen hiking network offers 285 kilometers of signposted trails and 276 junctions. The routes also vary in terrain: the network includes paved and unpaved paths, as well as so-called Laarzenpaden (boot trails). The paved paths are suitable at least for wheelchairs and strollers; conditions on the trails may vary locally.

There are also several options for exploring by bicycle. Route vol Verwondering comprises three cycling routes through the Zuid-Limburgse Grensmaasvallei, Selfkant in Germany and Maaseik in Belgium. These routes bring together nature, wide-open views and cultural heritage. A bike tour also makes it possible to ride from Belgium to Germany and back to the Netherlands in a single day. There is also a themed route for anyone wishing to discover the municipality’s religious sites by bike.

A route through the south of Susteren passes the Sint-Amelberga Basilica, through the IJzerenbos woodland with its wood anemones, and right along the German border. One tour brings together architecture, woodland and a border landscape.

Basilica, factory halls and fortifications

The Sint-Amelberga Basilica in Susteren was built in the mid-11th century in the late Ottonian style and is considered the oldest basilica in the Netherlands. These two facts tell different sides of its story: its architectural classification and its special status in Dutch cultural heritage.

Echt’s industrial history is also tangible here. In the second half of the 19th century, an important ceramics industry developed there, with roof tiles as its main product. The former De Valk roof-tile factory was given a new purpose as De Pannenfabriek. In the restored factory halls, which are protected as a Rijksmonument, gastronomy, history, culture and social gatherings come together.

Other stops take you back to different periods: the IJsstraat casemate was built as a defensive structure in 1939 and used to defend the eastern border on May 10, 1940. Today’s Kasteel Eyckholt dates from the mid-18th century, while its tower dates back to the 16th century. The historic castle also offers a culinary experience.

In Susteren, the Cultuurhuis Edith Stein offers another way to explore history and culture. It is home to the Stichting Dr. Edith Stein, the Museum van de Vrouw and the Historisch Informatie Punt of the heemkundekring Echterlandj. Since 2003, the Museum van de Vrouw has presented changing exhibitions focused on women and offered artists from Echt and the surrounding area opportunities to exhibit their work.

Water landscapes and regional products

The six-kilometer-long Middelsgraaf winds its way through the area; its widened banks protect the surroundings from flooding. Archaeological finds also offer insight into the landscape’s long history. These include a stone hammer axe from the Bronze Age (2000 to 800 BC) and part of a Celtic neck ring dating from 400 to 50 BC.

The nature area of het Marissen is home to fens formed at the end of the Ice Age, including Kranenbroek. These shallow, elongated bodies of water were created by windblown sand and provide a special habitat for plants and animals. In winter, Kranenbroek is suitable for ice skating, depending on seasonal conditions.

Abdij Lilbosch was founded in 1883 as a Cistercian abbey. It is considered the birthplace of Livar, the Limburg monastery pig. The abbey shop next to the abbey sells meat from these pigs and other artisanal products. The monks’ agricultural work includes tending their own fields, growing fruit and vegetables, and keeping bees.

For more culinary experiences, Bie Aloïs brings together a café, a museum, a tasting room and a cooking studio. It offers guided tours, tastings of special Brand beers, meals and special dinners. Kookatelier Wils runs cooking workshops where participants prepare dishes such as Italian, Thai or Japanese food and then take home a recipe booklet. Check the availability of workshops and dining options, as well as the abbey shop’s selection, before your trip.

When looking for a hotel in Echt-Susteren, start by deciding whether hiking routes, architectural history, museums or regional cuisine will be the focus of your stay. The municipality is accessible via the A73 and A2, and its varied attractions offer ideas for planning your trip.
