Sint Joost brings together the history of the former Caulieten monastery with distinctive buildings, memorial sites, and natural surroundings. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: you can explore architectural styles and local history or focus on the natural areas around the village. The Ommetje Sint Joost walking route leads from the village into nature; the historic buildings offer a different thematic perspective. You can tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.

Monastery History and Buildings

Sint Joost grew up around the former Caulieten monastery, which dates back to the 13th century. Kloosterhof is considered a remnant of the monastery, founded around 1300, and is protected as a Rijksmonument. The historic building is in the village centre: a whitewashed transept, partly built of marl, with large round-arched and pointed-arch window openings. The term transept refers to the building’s form; the openings can also be distinguished by their arch shapes. A round arch curves at the top, while a pointed arch converges to a point. If you want to understand a building by more than its age, you can also look for specific architectural features here, such as its materials, whitewash, and windows.

Schrevenhof offers a different perspective, with its distinctive layout: the complex is arranged around an inner courtyard, and its history dates back to the 14th century. At Schrevenhof, the focus is on the layout of the complex as a whole; at Kloosterhof, the transept and arched openings stand out. Comparing them highlights two different architectural questions: How is a complex arranged around a courtyard, and what forms distinguish an individual historic building? This distinction helps you appreciate the buildings as more than just examples of history.

The present-day Theresiakapel was built in 2002 at the corner of Bosweg and Caulietenstraat. This date provides a more recent point of reference alongside the older history of the former monastery and Schrevenhof, whose history reaches back to the 14th century. The buildings of Sint Joost therefore span a period from the medieval era to a structure built in 2002.

Religious Tradition and Remembrance

The Sint-Judocuskerk is dedicated to Saint Judocus. Judocus is considered the patron saint of pilgrims and boatmen and is invoked against fever and the plague. This brings religious tradition into focus alongside architectural history. The liberation monument commemorates the liberation of the village by the Allies on 20 and 21 January 1945. While the history of Kloosterhof and Schrevenhof stretches back over several centuries, the monument commemorates a clearly dated event. Religious tradition, a long architectural history, and the memory of liberation thus offer different ways to explore the history of Sint Joost.

Natural Areas Around Sint Joost

Sint Joost borders Landgoed Rozendaal, a natural area with flower-rich fields and woodland. The Ommetje Sint Joost walking route leads from the village into the natural areas of Grootbroek and Reigersbroek. Marissen, whose natural landscape is considered particularly varied, is also near Sint Joost. The locations have different geographical relationships to the village: Rozendaal borders it, the walking route leads into Grootbroek and Reigersbroek, and Marissen is nearby. This lets you distinguish between an adjoining natural area, the natural areas along the walking route, and another nearby place. Natural conditions can change, so check the latest conditions for the walking route before setting out.
