Bergen appeals to travelers who want to combine nature experiences and cultural history in one stay. At Reindersmeer, you can see a landscape created by sand extraction on the Bergerheide. The lake is 45 meters deep and covers 130 hectares—dimensions that shape the area as much as the paths along the water.

Hiking between heathland, forest and water

Nationaal Park De Maasduinen is a Natura 2000 site with a long river-dune landscape of heathland, forests and fens. Numerous hiking and cycling routes offer different ways to explore this landscape. At Landgoed De Hamert, dry and wet heathland and fens meet natural parabolic dunes. The area is a river-dune landscape formed by wind and water during the last Ice Age; forests, heathland, dunes and fens are part of its character. A hike of about 4.5 kilometers is possible there. The Ceresweg is a good way to explore the Eckeltse Bergen on foot or by bike.

At Reindersmeer, you can choose between a green trail of about 2.5 kilometers and a white trail of about 2.5 kilometers. The red route is about 8 kilometers long and can be shortened using a hand-operated ferry. A wheelchair-accessible route is also available. Since routes and their accessibility may change, check local notices before setting out.

You can also explore the Bergerbos on foot: its paths and trails are open year-round between sunrise and sunset. Follow the signs at the entrances. A nearby parking lot leads to the Sint-Annakapel, which can be visited. Check locally for current parking and access information.

Castles and archaeological traces

Kasteel Bleijenbeek was destroyed by an Allied bombardment in February 1945. Protected remains include a 15th-century cellar, large parts of the 17th-century standing masonry, and the surviving structure of the castle grounds, laid out in the 17th century and surrounded by a moat. The ruins can be visited as part of a guided tour lasting about two hours; tours are offered on several dates. They are not suitable for people with limited mobility. Check the available tour dates before planning your visit.

Kasteel Well tells a different story of construction: the moated castle was built in the 15th century and took on its present appearance in the 17th century. Numerous furnishings from the former church dating from 1320 have been preserved in the St. Vituskerk in Well. Archaeological finds also offer insight into the history of the area: traces of Mesolithic hunter-gatherer camps were discovered at the Well-Aijen site. An app-based experience brings in a virtual archaeologist to explain the history of these camps. The Maas valley between Well and Aijen has provisional monument status because of its archaeological value.

Urns and a bowl dating from between 600 and 100 BCE are on display at the Klant Contact Centrum in the town hall. Together with the castles, church and archaeological site, they offer a varied glimpse into the history of buildings and settlements—from the Mesolithic period to later centuries.

By the water and out and about with children

Bezoekerscentrum De Maasduinen is located in a former lock that once connected Reindersmeer with Leukermeer. It is a starting point for exploring Nationaal Park De Maasduinen; there is also a play forest around the visitor center. Bosbrasserie In de Sluis serves fresh pastries and lunch. Children aged 6 to 12 can follow an interactive walking route of about 4 kilometers from there.

Leukermeer also offers a perspective from the water: boats can reach it from the Maas via the outer harbor. Mooring is possible at the marinas or at jetties on the lake. The Waterboulevard Maaspark Well serves hikers and cyclists as a connection between Nationaal Park De Maasduinen and the Maas valley. This lets you consider the landscape, trails and water as different focal points when planning your stay.
