Afferden: Nature and Cultural History
Accommodation in Afferden
If you are looking for a hotel in Afferden, it is worth first considering the kind of stay you want: Afferden is part of Nationaal Park De Maasduinen. The village combines nature experiences with distinctive landscape features and a rich cultural history. From Afferden, you can walk straight into an extensive natural area with various forests, heathland and fens. Whether you would rather spend time outdoors or focus on historic buildings, the village offers different starting points for planning your visit.
Landscape and waters in the Maasduinen
De Maasduinen National Park is the longest river-dune area in the Netherlands. Its varied landscape includes forests, heathland, fens, drifting sand dunes and lakes. Afferden is part of this natural area; its different landscape types provide a setting for walks and trips on foot.
Het Esven / Lange Ven consists of two elongated bodies of water lying deep in the landscape, which are remnants of an old meander of the Meuse. Zevenboomsven formed in a hollow created by windblown sand during the Ice Age. The origins of the two landscape features are therefore quite different: one’s shape points to an earlier course of the Meuse, while the other was formed by Ice Age sand drift.
Exploring on foot and by bike
The cycling network in Afferden and the Maasduinen uses numbered junctions, bilingual directional signs in both directions, and information boards at the junctions. The numbered points serve as reference points for navigation; the signs and boards complement this system.
The Cultural and Historical Route around Afferden, Siebengewald and Bergen begins in Afferden on Kapelstraat, near the Kapel Onze Lieve Vrouw van Zeven Smarten and junction 86. The Duvelskuulroute has an optional starting point near RuĂŻne Bleijenbeek. If you plan to take one of these routes, check the route details before setting out, as they may be updated locally.
Cultural history in mills, churches and chapels
The Nooit Gedacht mill in Afferden replaced a mill built in 1852 and destroyed at the end of the Second World War during fighting between German and Allied troops. Nooit Gedacht was able to begin operating in 1958. These dates provide a timeline for the mill’s history—from its predecessor building and wartime destruction to the opening of its successor.
The H. Cosmas en Damianus Kerk also reflects different periods: the lower part of the tower probably dates from the 12th century, while the old Gothic church was built around 1500.
The Kapel van O.L.V. van Smarten, also known as the Mariakapel, was built as a small chapel in 1612 and attracted pilgrims from places outside Afferden. The larger chapel was added in 1909; it is directly attached to the original chapel. The Mariakapel was built in the neo-Romanesque style and extensively restored in 1983. Its construction history can thus be traced through the original chapel, the extension and the later restoration.
The Boskapel / Poaterskapel is dated to 1886 and was commissioned by French nuns who had found refuge at Kasteel Bleijenbeek. In good weather, a Mother’s Day celebration is traditionally held at the Poaterskapel each year. If you would like to include this celebration in your travel plans, check the date before you travel.
KasteelruĂŻne Bleijenbeek can also be explored again through guided excursions. Check the excursion calendar before your trip to see when they take place.
