Beek between woodland paths and cultural history
Accommodation in Beek
Beek can be explored through a wide range of themes: woodlands and water, historic buildings, places of remembrance and activities for active days. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can shape your excursions around whether you want to focus on nature and trails or cultural history. The landscape reveals itself along routes and in protected natural areas; elsewhere, the mill, church and historic buildings tell the story of the region’s past.
Woodland landscapes and routes
Vrouwenbos is a small woodland on a slope, surrounded by fields and pastures. Its rich ground vegetation also makes it a refuge for migratory birds. The Vrouwenbosroute offers views of the surrounding landscape at several points. Landgoed Genbroek offers a different natural setting: this 18.5-hectare area is protected and open for low-impact recreation. In Kelmonderveld, marshy grasslands and hillside woodland provide a habitat for badgers and bats. In Kelmonderbos, numerous springs feed a watercourse that flows towards Beek.
Several routes connect nature with history and local scenery. The Levensloopje runs from Levensbomenbos to the old Sint Martinus cemetery in Beek, along woodland paths through Kelmonderbos. The route is part of the Gedenkparken project. The Kelmonderbosroute passes through the green area around Kelmond and Klein-Genhout, along the Keutelbeek and through parks, woodlands, avenues and orchards. Along the way are old farmsteads and typical half-timbered houses. The “Rondje Creativiteit” route makes a former border between the Spanish Netherlands and the Dutch Republic visible through boundary markers. Travellers interested in archaeology can follow the “Ontmoet de oerboeren van Beek” route to several archaeological sites where remains of Linear Pottery settlements have been discovered.
Buildings and cultural history
The Banxhuis in Beek is a historic 18th-century monument and the former building of the Schepenbank. From 1793, it served as a meeting place for this institution, where justice was administered and mortgages registered. In Genhout stands the church dedicated to Saint Hubertus. Dating from 1937, it was built under the direction of Maastricht architect Alphons Boosten. Because many artists contributed to it, it is known as the Artists’ Church.
The Sint-Hubertusmolen was built in 1802 on behalf of farmer Willem Kerckhoffs from Klein Genhout; the Hubertusmolen is a Dutch national monument. In summer, free guided tours are offered on Wednesday afternoons when there is sufficient wind. Check before travelling whether a tour date fits your plans. The open-air theatre in Spaubeek also has special cultural-historical and landscape value: since July 2023, it has been designated a municipal monument. Work began in 1920 at the initiative of parish priest Eduard Beckers, and the theatre was completed in 1922.
Museum and activities
The Elsmuseum Beek is housed in the former building of the Jacques Hennekens distillery and is dedicated to the herbal liqueur Els La Vera. Volunteers use historic distilling equipment to demonstrate small-scale distillation. A small tasting may be included after the visit. This brings together the history of a local product and an insight into how it is made.
For an active outing, Mini Bikepark Beek offers something different: young people in particular can learn skills for off-road gravel and mountain biking in a safe environment. The park is also suitable for people with disabilities. It is freely accessible from sunrise to sunset; visitors use it at their own risk. At Sportlandgoed De Haamen, visitors can take part in recreational and competitive sports, as well as sports activities for older people and people with disabilities. Numerous Nordic walking, hiking and cycling routes start there; there is also a network of mountain biking and horse-riding trails. Sportlandgoed is close to the A2 and A76 motorways and has plenty of free parking.
Planning your visit
Natuurtransferium Beek is open to visitors daily and serves as a starting and finishing point for hiking, mountain biking and cycling routes. Beek is also a junction on the Route vol Verwondering, which visitors can join there. Spaubeek has a railway station. When planning your stay, you can choose between nature trails, cultural attractions and sporting activities, without having to focus every excursion on the same theme.
