The Maas shapes the landscape in the municipality of Beesel. Hiking and cycling routes run along the river, where you can enjoy peace and nature. The network of walking trails also offers plenty of options for planning your outings: it covers almost 100 kilometres and has around 125 junctions. This lets you get to know Beesel through its trails and landscapes, rather than limiting your stay to individual attractions.

Hiking among wetlands, the Maas and sculptures

In Meerlebroek, a marked hiking trail starts at Muiterdijk. It passes Galloway cattle and two wetland areas. These wetlands provide a habitat for flora and fauna. Meerlebroek and Beesels Broek are two nature areas in the municipality of Beesel; their rare natural features also include badger setts.

Another hike combines nature and culture: the Beesels Broek–Bakhei route passes cultural attractions such as a castle, several chapels and old farmhouses. If you would like to include public art in your outing, Beesel has around 30 works, including wall reliefs, bronze sculptures and a fountain. They can be seen on foot or by bicycle.

The 10-kilometre Grote Sculpturen Route by Rik van Rijswick loops around Beesel and starts at the Grote Draak. You can explore it on foot or by bicycle. The Archaeological Cycling Route Beesel takes a different approach: at three stops, you can hear stories about archaeological finds. Four additional stops complement the route with audio stories and photos about significant cultural heritage in the municipality. Its official starting point is near the market square in Beesel; the route then returns to the market square. Each tour offers a different focus—from wetlands and nature to sculptures and archaeological stories.

The Dragon Pageant, ceramics and history

The Dragon Pageant is an open-air play performed every seven years and based on the legend of Saint George and the dragon. Around 400 local amateur performers take part. In 2012, the Dragon Pageant was added to the Netherlands’ National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Visitors can explore the theme on guided tours with the Beesel village guides, on a children’s walk or with an audio guide. Check in advance which of these options are currently available.

Ceramics are also part of Beesel’s cultural identity. The Beesel Museum’s permanent exhibition features ceramic works inspired by the Dragon Pageant, as well as works from the art collections of the Beesel ceramics companies St. Joris and Loré. The products of the St. Joris Ceramic Industry are known for their distinctive colour palette and salt glaze. The St. Joris ceramics studio has enjoyed a strong reputation well beyond the country’s borders since the 1930s; the reputation of Atelier Loré dates back to the mid-1950s.

The De Grauwe Beer windmill was built as a sawmill in Zaandam in 1614, moved to Beesel in 1891 and recommissioned in 1983. Volunteer millers operate the mill regularly and show visitors around. If you are planning a tour, check the date in advance. Another protected attraction is Ronkenstein, a designated protected townscape in the municipalities of Beesel and Venlo in the province of Limburg.

Gardens and other experiences

At the Historic Vegetable Garden, visitors can see, touch, taste and experience old varieties of vegetables. The site also includes an herb garden and many flowers. Drakenrijk offers a day at the beach and disc golf in Drakenbos. The De Drakenbijen apiary in Beesel runs workshops and children’s birthday parties. Before visiting Drakenrijk, check its current operating conditions; for De Drakenbijen, check which activities are available.

For a river crossing, a ferry runs daily between Kessel in the municipality of Peel en Maas and Reuver in the municipality of Beesel. It is suitable for motor vehicles and light road traffic. If you plan to take the ferry, check the timetable before setting off.
